Pros: Powerful for the price.
Cons: Dust bags to buy.
The Eureka Maxima canister vacuum cleaner is light, easy to handle and does a great job. Best of all the price was under $50 on sale. I recently purchased the Model 972B in bright yellow color because my old upright just could not do a thorough job of cleaning. The canister along with attachments allow me to suck up crumbs from under seat cushions and appears to have more suction power than an upright. It was relatively quiet and did a great job picking up small objects like food crumbs and clothing lint. I removed the floor tool to suck up dog hair with the hose alone and it does have good suction power.
The Maxima vacuum comes in a lightweight box and you need to put the parts together. There is the canister, the wand, and the floor tool so reading the instructions on how to get started are a must. The surface of the canister is modern, sleek and a bright yellow color of smooth plastic. You will need to consult the instruction booklet in order to identify the parts of the cleaner as the on-off and cord are not easily identifiable.
There is a long 18 foot cord which rewinds automatically back into the canister at the touch of the pedal on the left. On the right at the back is the on-off pedal. Most models have a bag indicator light. Unlike my bagless upright, I appreciate the bag since it keeps the dust and dirt in check and easy to remove. The vacuum does come with the bag installed and two more bags for future use.
There is a hole at the top of the canister like a whale blow-hole which is called the hose inlet and you need to click the hose which is attached to the wand into the hole which will snap when installed properly. The bag cover latch is at the front of the canister and easily lifts up. In front of that is the carry handle which makes it easy to transport the vacuum from room to room.
The Maxima also comes with a mini dusting brush and crevice tool. The telescoping wand can be adjusted for height and has sliders on the side of the wand to control the suction and air flow. You can open the air valve to reduce the suction. The combination floor tool can be used on rugs and bare floors by adjusting the lever forward for bare floors and back for carpet. I really like the flush and flat front to the floor tool and it did an exceptional job of getting into baseboard areas.
Dust bags are easily installed by putting the cardboard collar of the bag into the dust bag frame until the collar snaps into position. The bags are small and inexpensive to purchase.
There is also a micron filter at the back of the canister. This needs to be changed twice a year but checked with each dust bag change. It is cleaned by just brushing over a trash can. It goes on the back side of the filter door and closed until it snaps shut.
The best part was the price. I paid $49.95 on sale and was able to easily carry it home since the box was not heavy. I love the bright yellow color and the modern appearance. The instructions are easy to read and there is a one year warranty in material and workmanship and customer service information.
