tbrown's Full Review: Euro-Pro GI490 Iron with Auto Shut-off
I bought the Euro-Pro Shark G1490 Professional Electronic Iron about six months ago after my son borrowed my old dollar store iron and never returned it. I had only paid ten dollars for the old iron but it had lasted me over five years so I figured I'd gotten my money out of it. When it was clear I wouldn't be getting my old iron back, I decided to buy a new one and even upgrade a bit. I had seen the Euro-Pro Shark advertised in a mail order catalog I'd been getting so I decided to give it a try. With all the features the ad listed, I figured the iron would probably last me a long time. So, I ignored what seemed a fairly high price ($69 + shipping/handling) and ordered one.
The iron arrived very quickly and was very well-packed. I was pleased to see that it had a long pivot cord, which is one of the things I had always needed on my old iron. The pivot cord helps keep the cord from dragging on fabrics. The cord also has a flexible protector that helps prevent cord fraying.
The iron is very sleek and modern looking and has many other features. The features include a Burst of Steam with X-tended Steam Burst Button feature. With this feature, the iron removes more stubborn wrinkles from denim, cotton or linen fabrics.
Another of the iron's features is the atomizer spray button, which provides a jet of water spray to moisten fabrics while ironing. There is also a variable steam control with a self cleaning feature that flushes the internal sole plate with water, an electronic temperature control for setting the amount of heat for different fabrics, an auto-drip function, LED display panel for fabric settings, a water filling inlet with cover that allows for filling of the water tank and and also stops any spillage during ironing, as well as a built-in calcium filter to prolong the life of the iron.
The Electronic Auto-Off feature automatically turns the iron off after it has not been moved for 7-9 minutes. This is especially useful to me since it seems I always have to stop ironing to do something else and often forget to turn off the iron.
The owner's manual stresses emptying the iron after each use, which has been a bit of a problem since I can't seem to remember to do this each time I finish ironing. Another problem that is mine more than the iron's is the self-cleaning the user should perform each two weeks to remove any scale or calcium deposits. Still, even though I've often failed to drain after each use and self-clean the unit every two weeks, the iron seems to be performing just as it should.
I've found this iron to be very effective on all kinds of fabrics, delivering the amount of heat needed each time. Since I use lots of steam when ironing, I have to be careful to keep the water level at least half full, as the instructions advise.
I must say that I have been quite satisfied with the Euro-Pro Shark G1490 Professional Electronic Iron. However, after reading several negative reviews on this product I'm beginning to wonder when my Shark will start to malfunction. For now, I would recommend this product to others.
