Shark SV780 Cordless Vacuum Review

Introduction
It seems like when I'm not looking for “toys” or some fun gadget to buy, there's always a place in my heart for a useful product. Before buying anything that I want to get a lot of practical use out of, I
usually try to do my homework on the subject. This became the case a few months ago for handheld vacuums. I didn't want a piece of junk, but I also didn't want something super expensive. I simply wanted good quality and value for a decent price, but it didn't have to be the expensive kind with features I don’t need.

After doing some research, the Shark SV780 seemed to fit the bill. It reportedly had a lot of suction power and was under $80. I finally decided on this one as it sounded like the best handheld vacuum for me. I've had it for a month or two now... So how does it hold up? Read on...

What's in the box?
-1 Shark SV780 Handheld/Cordless Vacuum
-1 Crevice attachment
-1 Rotating brush attachment
-1 Regular brush attachment
-1 Cradle/Docking station
-1 Wall charger

First Impressions
Upon taking everything out of the box, my first thought was that everything seems sturdy and of good quality. The crevice attachment, for example, is made of a thick plastic and not some cheap garbage. All of the attachments felt this way, like I didn't just purchase one of those regretful cheapo products. The vacuum itself is a little on the heavy side, but in a good way. Again, it feels like it's not cheap or junky.

The rotating brush head, at a glance, has a nice design. It has two prongs that attach into the vacuum so that it runs off of the actual vacuum's power. I'm not sure if other vacuums design their rotating brushes around cheap linkage, but this one specifically uses a good design.

There is only one wall charger included, and it is used to align the connector into the docking station and lock into place. When the vacuum then sits into the docking station, the charging connector makes its connection. I'm usually weary of these types of designs, as it doesn't feel genuine. I have had no problems with this design, however.

One minor complaint I have about the docking station is that it does not come with a mounting kit. You're on your own as far as mounting the dock goes. At a glance, that's really my only complaint during the unboxing.

Usage: How does it hold up?
The first thing we must do is decide what needs to be vacuumed, and then choose an attachment. First up, the crevice attachment. One of the main reasons I wanted this vacuum is so that I can vacuum my car. I try to vacuum my car frequent enough so that I don't have to take a clunky shop vac to the inside of it when I DO decide to clean it. So, I decided to take the vacuum to the inside of my car and also in the crevice area where my trunk closes. Upon the first use, I can tell this vacuum has great suction and the crevice attachment works just as it should. You can fit the attachment in small areas and power of the vacuum gets pretty much anything. The only time it doesn't seem to suck something up is if the attachment is too far away. “Too far away” would probably be defined at an inch or more. One complaint I have about the crevice attachment is that it's a bit on the short side. It's probably only about six or maybe 7 inches long. This does not work very well when trying to vacuum in the sides of the car seats.

Next is the attachment that I really wanted to try out. The rotating brush attachment. The best example I can give for this attachment is another car vacuuming scenario. I had someone in my car who left a pretty dark dirt print on my carpet in the back. My concern was the weight of their foot grinding the dirt further into the carpet, leaving a permanent brown spot on my black carpet. Well, the rotating brush attachment took the dirt right out pretty much instantly. The power on this vacuum is really good for a cordless. Once the brush loosened the dirt, the vacuum sucked it right up. In fact, it works so well that I find myself using this attachment even when I may not need it. The bottom line is that this rotating brush attachment really does a great job.

As far as the regular brush attachment goes, I've never actually to use it. I'm not quite sure what such an attachment would even be needed for, especially when you have the rotating brush attachment.

Emptying the vacuum is very easy. Simply press the button on the dirt cup and slide it off. Pull out the filter and simply empty the dirt cup. You may sometimes need to pull some hair or thicker deposits off of the filter, but that comes with the territory. As advertised by Shark, this vacuum is bagless.

Suction Power
It's pretty clear, during the first use, that this vacuum is definitely very powerful for a cordless vacuum. It won't be rivaling the suction power of a shop vac, however it's got more than enough power to pick up quarters and nickels. Even with the rotating brush attachment connected, the suction is still awesome. I thought the attachment would muffle some of the suction power, but it doesn't. It works great. The only time I saw a real decrease in suction power is if the dirt cup starts to get full and the filter gets blocked. Simply empty it out, tend to the filter and you're good to go again.

Charging and Battery Life
One downside on the charging factor is that the manual tells you to disconnect the vacuum once it's fully charged. This means that the charger does not have peak detection, which would stop charging the vacuum when it detects a full battery. I certainly don't need one more thing to worry about, so I haven't been disconnecting it. I let that sucker sit on the dock until its next use, whether it's fully charged or not. I haven't had any problems with it thus far.

The battery life is hard to judge for me. I don't really use this vacuum for long periods of time. It's usually reserved for quick cleanups when something spills or when I need to clean the inside of my car. With that said, I certainly haven't noticed an abnormally short battery life, which is a great sign.

Conclusion
To conclude the review of this vacuum: It's awesome! It has very few draw backs, and the price is perfect. For $60, it's WELL worth it. It's powerful and reliable, but also very portable. It's a low maintenance vacuum that's there when you want it to be, and out of way when you don't want it in the way.

It has a few cons, such as the crevice attachment being a bit on the short side. The docking station doesn't include the wall mounting kit to screw it into the wall, which is only a minor setback. The suction is powerful about 90% of the time unless the filter gets block by dirt/crud/hair. The final downside...It's purple. The purple color is a bit girly, but the quality of this thing will make up for the lack of manliness in its exterior design!

Ultimately, this is a great vacuum for a great price. I love this thing! If you need something for around the house to clean up those unexpected spills or messes, this will work beautifully. And it even works great for some of the practical uses that a large vacuum provides as well!
