Many problems, not with the cars though

Pros: Fine cars, good prices.
Cons: Their system is dysfunctional. If you use them, save your paperwork
The Bottom Line: Be careful because their system seems dysfunctional. I had two seriously bad experiences.

On two occasions we reserved and paid for Europcar rentals through Auto Europe in the States, which is their booking agent.
Several years ago we rented two cars in Rome, which were terrific. About a year later, I received a letter from a collection agency stating (incorrectly) that I owed money for one of the cars. After many, many exchanges of e-mails, they admitted they'd been wrong and apologized.
Last month we went to the Europcar counter in Barcelona to pick up a car we'd paid for (the same way - using Auto Europe) and were told my name was in the system as a "do not rent to". We got around it by having my husband sign the paperwork.
Upon our return, I sent all the previous correspondence, which (luckily) I'd kept on my computer and asked them to remove the negative report in their system. I've sent many e-mails and gotten the response that it wasn't the Rome office that had entered me into the system. Further attempts to ask them to investigate it and remove my name got no response and then this week, I got an e-mail from the same man who'd responded several years ago and told me the mistake was their, sending invoices and telling me he'd been wrong, that I owe money (this is 2008 for a car I rented in 2005).
This situation has made me wary of the company, and the problems are compounded because you pay in advance. I'm not sure what would have happened if I'd been alone with a paid reservation and their refusing to give me a car. I suspect I would have had trouble getting a refund.
Having said that, the cars were fine, which makes these other problems sad.
We keep records, but they seem not to operate professionally, at least that was the experience with the Rome office.
