| sunstreeks's Full Review: Evenflo Contoured Comfort Disposable Nursing Pads |
It was my intention to breastfeed my baby girl until she was 6 months. I knew that I would be buying breast pads I just didnt know which ones. I only knew I didnt want re-useable, breast pads meant to be washed in with regular laundry. I had no idea what to look for in disposables. I received a few samples in the diaper bag full of goodies the hospital gave me. The samples seemed big and bulky. I didnt want to be wearing shoulder pads in my bra so I went looking for something thinner that was still absorbent.
The first ones I chose were the Evenflo Contoured Comfort Disposable Nursing Pads. They were super thin like a panty liner. I was only able to feed for the first month of Allys life and they fit the bill for what I was looking for. They absorbed any leaks and I didnt feel like I was adding a cup size. But my leaks were minimal.
They werent the best though, not even close. They did what I needed them to but if I had continued feeding for longer I would definitely have chosen something different. These just wouldnt have worked if I had more of a milk supply.
The Shape and Feel
The breast pads are very thin but formed in a cup to fit the curves of your breast. In the middle there is a small round nipple so you always appear cold or excited so to speak. For some this may be embarrassing. I wear mostly camisoles, tank-top undershirts with cleavages holders built in. I really didnt care if I appeared cold. But with my camisoles I really didnt like the line on my breast. The line Im referring to being the fold from one end to the middle nipple part. Im not sure why they have this. Im guessing it is necessary to form the pad into a more curved, natural shape. Whatever it was it made it impossible to wear just a t-shirt with out also wearing a regular nursing bra, which I hated.
The pad had a very papery feel to it. The outer part felt just like paper. The part that went against your breast felt like a Kleenex. It was a bit rough for for this new mother just starting breastfeeding. It can be very irritating if you have sensitivity issues and your breast already feels raw and bruised.
The Absorbency.
While I never had trouble with having too much milk, someone who does would not want these at all. I only used these for the first month and never was able to get a good amount of milk other than what my daughter needed. I could pump for an hour and only get an ounce from each, two if I was lucky. So what they did for me was hold back those very few drops that let out from anything being against my breast during the day. When I started weaning my baby girl slowly to a bottle I filled up a bit in between feedings. These did hold hold the leaks caused by that but I couldnt imagine having a regular milk supply, I would have been too afraid that it would fill and leak out the ends.
Inside there are small crystals that soak up the fluid and become gel-like to hold it there. Like I said, for me it worked. I just dont think someone with regular flow could use these without replacing every couple hours.
A few times I forgot to take them out of my camisole before washing. When moving clothes from washer to dryer Id find everything covered in these gel-like crystals. They would disappear when the clothes were dry but I always wondered what effect they had on the clothes they got on and if there were any fabrics they could damage. Everything I had came out fine but Id be careful with fabrics that require special care.
Staying In Place
Obviously wearing a camisole I expected them to move. I wore them to bed and would find at least one either out of my top all together or over on my side under my armpit. During the day they stayed in place better but even when wearing a nursing bra they tended to shift. They advertise a slip resistant material but I would much rather have something with a sticky back that adhered to my clothing wear I wanted it too.
Not Again
I will try again if and when I have another child to breastfeed. I will not be using these Evenflo Contoured Comfort Disposable Nursing Pads. They were one of the cheapest offering what I wanted but Im sure not the most effective. Had continued for longer I would have switched to something else and paid the extra money.
This is just one of those You get what you pay for kind of things.
