| ChriseyB's Full Review: Evenflo Glass Nurser |
When my oldest son was able to use bottles, we used the Playtex Nursers with him because of all the extra precautions we needed to take because of his health problems. We figured that the Playtex Nursers were a better guarantee when it came to sterilization since it only used bags. While it was a hassle sometimes, like when we are on the road and needed a fresh bottle because we ran out, we did it for him. By the time my youngest son came along, I told the doctor of the gambit we ran with our oldest and what did she suggest. She told us to try Evenflo Glass Nursers. So, we took her suggestion and bought some bottles. While it did do the trick, we did have some problems with it that I will state later on.
First, let me tell you a little about the Evenflo Glass Nursers. They are basically glass bottles to feed your baby, very similar to traditional bottles. You have the option of purchasing an 8-ounce nurser or a 4-ounce nurser. Regardless of the size, each bottle you purchase comes with a regular latex nipple (a traditional one), a plastic retainer ring for the nipple, a cap for the nipple and a sealing disc to put in place of a nipple if you are taking the bottle to go and it is not for use at that point. The disc is better for travel than a nipple because, unlike a nipple, there are no holes in the disc that would allow the milk to escape.
Now there are a couple of pluses to having a glass nurser which is the reason why we bought Evenflo Glass Nursers. First of all, they are a lot easier to clean than some plastic bottles. Some problems that we have encountered with plastic bottles from babysitting family members babies is that with plastic bottles, sometimes if don’t mix the formula well enough the partially water powder can get stuck in a nook in the bottle and it is really tough to clean out. With glass bottles, cleaning is a snap. It is really hard to make something stick and stay on glass.
The other thing that is great about the Evenflo Glass Nursers is the simplicity it takes to sterilize them. My biggest fear when it comes to boiling a plastic bottle to sterilize it that will melt while I boil it. With glass bottles, you have to have some pretty extreme temperatures for that to happen—you know, like setting the thing on fire for a long period of time. (Don’t worry, I haven’t tried this on these bottles, but I did do it to glass in Chemistry class in school.)
Now the other big plus that I have found with the Evenflo Glass Nursers is that when you heat up a bottle, it tends to keep its heat more. Now this is not stated on the packaging for this bottle, but it is something I have noticed with my use of them.
But, even, with all of this, there are some cons. The first one goes in hand with my last pro. While it does seems to retain the heat longer in the Evenflo Glass Nursers, it also seems to take a little longer to heat. While I am patient, a crying hungry baby is not. So, when it comes to heating, this bottle takes a little forethought.
Another con about the Evenflo Glass Nursers is that because it is made entirely of glass, it is a heavy bottle. So, after holding this bottle up for you baby to drink, it gets a little tiresome on the wrists and hands. Also when the time comes for your baby to hold his own bottle, this type of bottle is just too heavy for those little hands. Furthermore, should you accidentally drop it on your foot, prepare to talk like a sailor because that thing hurts when it lands!
Now, the final con of the Evenflo Glass Nursers is that because they are made of glass, they are more prone to breakage—especially on concrete (like duh!). A few times I have dropped these bottles on a hard surface and just watch them break and there wasn’t a thing I could do about it. But what can you expect when you are using glass bottles…
Parents, while I did find these bottles very good to use and they met my needs, I think the cons out weighed the pros and I, eventually, switched to plastic bottles. While I will not sit here and not recommend the Evenflo Glass Nursers, I won’t sit here and recommend them either. When it comes to these bottles, it is going to have to be a choice that you have to make on whether or not these would be beneficial for you—of course, this is just my Epinion…
