| VeeZee's Full Review: Evenflo Glass Nurser |
In The Beginning
Although I love Evenflo bottles, I never felt too safe allowing my son to use the Evenflo Glass Nursers. That is why I only used the four ounce size and did so only until my son could start holding his own bottle. When I was in control of the bottle (holding it for him), I wasn't as worried about accidents, although the risk was always there. Once my son started holding bottles on his own, however, the glass nursers posed a hazard that I wasn't willing to risk, so I retired my collection of the Evenflo Glass Nursers and turned to the safer plastic versions.
Why Did I Like Them?
Without a doubt, I love the glass nursers and if they weren't so dangerous for my son to hold on his own I'd have used them the entire time he bottle fed. I suppose they just feel like a wise choice since they are old-fashioned and more popular with the older mothers in my family , but the facts behind that reasoning are that they are definitely easier to keep clean since they don't have film forming on their insides over time as plastic bottles are subject to, and they heat up more evenly and are safe for stove top and microwave. There has been some concern about the safety of clear plastic bottles when they are heated, as a toxin can be released from the plastic. Also, they are a heavy duty glass, and even though they can shatter if dropped, I didn't have any trouble with pieces breaking off around the rims.
What Are They Like?
The Evenflo Glass Nurser takes the same nipple as its plastic counterpart, and is slim in design with clear measurement markings on the sides. Although I only used the four ounce size, there is an eight ounce size available. The nipple rim seals tightly to the bottle itself, so that no leaks occur. The nipple is slender and meant to simulate nature, as it is soft, rounded, and allows a uniform flow of fluid that an infant can handle without being choked. The nipple fits snugly in the rim to prevent against leaks, and the cap locks onto the rim so that messes aren't a concern when traveling.
Even if you turn the bottle topsy-turvy, the flow control nipple ensures that the mess will be minimal unless the bottle is left in that position for a long time. I found that the individual pieces were easy to keep clean with a bottle brush (one with attachments is ideal), although you can place everything in the dishwasher and have it come out clean. A bottle brush reaches the insides of the bottle easily. When the bottle is not in use, you can turn the nipple upside down under the rim and then place the cap over the rim to keep the nipple and bottle sanitary. These bottles do travel well since they are a slender design, and baby can grip them with ease.
What's Not To Like?
The obvious disadvantage to these bottles is the fact that they are breakable, and could pose a risk to your child's safety. If your child is like my son was with his bottle, it will not be treated with ease. He was likely to toss it across the room in an instant, and even though most of our floors are carpeted, I still wouldn't feel safe with a glass bottle being banged around. The pieces, if broken, could cause serious injury, and I just did not want to take that chance. Other than that, these bottles are of high quality.
In The End
When all is said and done, I'd say the price for these bottles is reasonable (around $1.50) even if I only had about four months of use out of the glass nursers. A good idea if you are like me and do not like the idea of heating plastic nursers is to heat the milk in these glass nursers and then transfer it to the plastic nursers for your child's safety. I know this may not be practical as there is extra clean up and it takes a few minutes longer, but if it helps ensure the well-being of your child, no amount of inconvenience is too great, right?
