| jdstevenson's Full Review: Ever Clean Premium Clumping Litter/Extra Strength ... |
After trying several brands (Arm and Hammer, Exquisicat Advanced, Scoop Away), I really think EverClean is the best clumping litter on the market. It costs more, but is worth the expense (you don't have to replace the entire pan due to stray particles nearly as often).
The main thing I look for in a litter is it's ability to form hard clumps around urine that do not break or stick to the sides of the pan and crumble. When clumps break, the small remaining particles often slide through the scoop you use and remain in the litter -- causing odor to gradually build up. The better the clumping, the less the odor, and the happier your cats are. And cat happiness is paramount, because unhappy cats will leave you 'treats' in the most unwelcome of places if they are upset about the condition of their litter pan. Trust me on this, I've been there.
In my experience, there is a trade off between the ability for a litter to clump and the degree the litter will track away from the pan. Typically, the better clumping litters are composed of really fine particles. The finer the particle, the more likely they will stick to your kitties paws and end up outside the pan. And yes, EverClean is fine and does tend to track. It's a trade-off I can live with. To solve the problem, I bought a welcome mat at Target and placed it just outside of the opening to the litter box. 99.9% of the litter on their paws comes off on the mat and I just roll it up and shake the extra particles back into the litter when I clean the box.
Aside from good clumping, this litter seems to have good deodorizing agents built in. I seldom detect odors even when the box needs to be changed.
