This review is in response to Bryan Carey's, 2,000 years, 2,000 Reviews Write-Off. Might I add, what an astonishing feat. Congratulations, Bryan, and may you write many more. And, now, without further ado:
December, 1999: I remember it well, not only because I joined Epinions on the 12th, but because we were planning an all out bash on the 31st. Little was I to know what would happen on that fateful night. I was still married in 1999-2000 so our barbeques and parties were a little bigger than the ones I plan now.
All started out really well as our guests started to arrive, all dropping a bottle off at the bar. I wasnt drinking as I can usually take it or leave it. Alcohol is only something I drink once in a while and I did plan to drink a little champagne at midnight. My friend arrived and swaggered over. I could tell she was feeling no pain as she giggled her hellos and gave me a hug. She disappeared to the bar area as I greeted some more guests. She is such a ham, especially when she is tipsy. Not two minutes later she reappeared with two drinks. Here, try this, she urged. Oh, alright, I replied. Well it was New Years Eve and a White Russian wouldnt hurt.
The White Russian is one of the most popular drinks containing Kahlua: 1 1/2 ounces vodka, 1 ounce of Kahlua, mixed with ice and filled with milk, shaken, and served in a highball glass. This particular White Russian was laced with Everclear Vodka.
About Everclear:
Everclear is a brand of pure grain alcohol, available in 190 proof (95%) and a less common 151 proof (75.5%) variant. It is produced by the David Sherman Corporation.Because of its strength it is illegal in many US states, and probably not available outside USA (at least not the 190 proof variant). Everclear is basically a strong form of vodka.
Warning: Can be lethal when used as shots or substituted for water in Jello shooters.
My Experience:
Yes, well. My experience with Everclear was somewhat short-lived, in a way. The first one went down smoothly but fired up my throat somewhat for a couple of seconds. That was the only time I could feel a hint of alcohol. Compared to regular vodka in my White Russians, this was very vague in taste. My friend, of course, had failed to let me know how strong it was. (She would pay dearly later). HMmmmmm... I said, after I drained the glass. More, please! She was happy to oblige. I started feeling a little jolly after that first drink. 190 proof hit me between the eyes with the second one and that is all I remember.
I woke up in Louisiana the next morning. Apparently I had had a rare old time gambling at Coushatta with the rest of the gang. I had drank three of those Hot Russians, as we call them now, but I do not recall ringing in the new Millenium or losing a bunch of money in the casino. I am glad for me that I had such a blast. I just wish I could remember.
The hangover was intense but short. My friend was violently sick (guffaw, we still laugh about that memory) that morning although a couple of Tylenol extra strength and about two gallons of water took care of it for me.
Conclusion:
Everclear Vodka is a very potent grain alcohol. At 190 proof, it is almost all alcohol and just six or seven shots of this can be dangerous and sometimes lethal. I was annoyed at my friend at first when I found out what she had given me. However, my husband had intervened at our third glass and given us a couple of weak wine coolers a couple of hours later (I dont remember that either).
To tell you the truth, I wouldnt drink Everclear Vodka again. I mean, why drink it when I get amnesia as a result. The fact that it can be lethal scares me and it really wasnt that special. I would have preferred having the memory of ringing in the Millenium with my friends, sober.
By the way, that New Years Eve, some good friends of ours came to stay with us at New Years. They had a huge RV that we all piled into for our excursion to Louisiana (oh, yeah, I won $25 playing poker on the way (NOT THAT I REMEMBER!) and the designated driver who DID NOT DRINK had a blast along with us.
It has been a delight being a member of Epinions along side Bryan all these years. I cant say I have read and rated all of those 2,000 reviews but I came pretty close. I can honestly say that I respect all of Bryans opinions and he is one of the biggest assets to this site.
