omar107's Full Review: Everybody Got Their Something by Nikka Costa
She wore this electric blue shirt with a cut down the middle. It didn't show off her breasts, just the space in between. She danced with the microphone, not like it was another person, but an extension of her body. She's the goddaughter of Frank Sinatra and it shows. She's a marvelous performer, and can sing her beautiful butt off (luckily she hasn't yet). She's Nikka Costa, and when I saw her video for "Like a Feather" I was instantly intrigued. She's got soul, she's got funk, she can rock when she wants to. And I'm absolutely in love with her.
...Oh yeah, the rest of the album is great too.
With searing ballads like "Just Because" and "The Corners of MY Mind," you would think that Nikka was going to be the next Mariah Carey, but with talent. However, if you listen to the rest of the album, you realize she's so much more...so very much more.
With grunge over, boy bands thankfully subsiding, hip-hop in somewhat of a redundant place at the moment, and techno not turning out to be the savior everyone expected it to be, music has been waiting for the next big thing. Nikka Costa is it! With tracks like "Tug of War" and "Hope it Felt Good," she shows she's using rock and funk and r&B and just pure attitude in a way that can't even be defined as fusion...it's a whole new and wonderful sound. Nikka Costa can write great lyrics (in that way, she reminds me of Janet Jackson), but she can also sing them in such an honest and bold way that reminds me of Janis Joplin as much as it does of Chris Robinson.
