For years, I was plagued by migraines--if you're reading this, you know what kind of pain I mean: searing pain over one eye, extreme sensitivity to light, nausea.
I tried every over-the-counter medicine available to help, to no avail--Advil, Tylenol, asprin, you name it. I had heard of Excedrin, but I figured it was just one of the same that hadn't worked. Out of sheer desperation, I would just go to bed for the rest of the day in a darkened room and wait out the pain--which usually was gone by morning, fortunately.
I finally tried Excedrin on the advice of a friend who told me it worked for her--and she was right. Nothing else non-prescription had been able to even remotely diminish my migraine pain, until now. Now when I feel a migraine coming on, or even when one is full-blown, I reach for that green bottle, and usually within a half hour my pain is totally gone.
I am impressed that an over-the-counter medicine is able to work so effectively for me. I was reluctant to take a stronger prescription medicine because at the time I was thinking of having a baby and I did not want the adverse side-effects of such medicine to interfere with that. I have been very happy, overall, with how Excedrin works for me.
There are times that it does NOT work, however. When the pain is unusually intense for me, Excedrin isn't strong enough. I know there are people out there who experience much worse migraine pain than I do (and since mine is plenty bad enough, I feel for those of you whom I'm referring to!). My guess is that in those cases, prescription medicine is the only thing that will work.
I must admit, too, that I rarely buy the brand name "Excedrin" any longer--I buy the store brand of "Super Strength Pain Relief". It works just the same but costs half as much. Read the label to compare ingredients and you'll save a bundle.
Another possible down-side: one of the active ingredients is caffeine. If your migraine happens in the late afternoon or later, you may very well trade sleep for pain relief. I personally try to sleep off the pain if that happens in the late afternoon or after, then follow up with Excedrin in the morning if the pain persists. But with relentless pain, I think sleeplessness is preferable.
The bottom line is this--try Excedrin for your migraine pain. It worked for me, and I had almost given up on an OTC solution.
