fredrick2003's Full Review: Excite Truck for Nintendo Wii
I got my brand new Wii at midnight, launch day, and of course it came time to pick out some games to play on the new system.
I purchased Red Steel (which I will review) and Excite Truck, despite people telling me that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is the only game you should get (i've never been a fan of Zelda really, even in the NES days).
Graphics:
If you have been researching the Wii for months or years (as I did) you would know that it is the least powerful of the 3 next generation consoles (XBox 360, Playstation 3). I do not own an Xbox 360 or a Playstation 3, so I cannot really compare the graphics, but I think they are pretty well done. Actually, I would probably put them up there with the best i've seen. Everything just looks so perfect. There is one track on the game where a Tornado periodically shows up, and I thought that part was very cool, the way the dirt particles are kicked up and the screen shakes, just felt right.
Sound:
The in-game music wasn't very noticeable. It didn't make you say "wow, that is good music!" but it also didn't make you say "ugh, why did they pick such terrible music!". You will be focusing on the game and unless you get to one of the less exciting songs (hey, not everything is perfect) you won't even realize there is music playing, you will be to busy enjoying the gameplay.
Story:
There is no story for this game. You have trucks, and they race is extremely unrealistic fashion.
Wii Controls:
Probobly the most important factor for the Wii games will be how the utilize the motion sensitive controller, and I think this game does a good job of showcasing that. To steer your truck, you tilt the controller left or right, depending on the direction you want to turn. This will be extremely awkward at first but if you stick with it for about 15 minutes you will be playing the game as you would be if you we're using the classic analog stick/D-pad setup.
The D-pad on the controller is used for "turbo boosting" you just press any button on the D-pad to do that. And the 1 button is gas and the 2 button is break. If you are in the air you can hold the A button and move the controller to do some tricks, but it's really not worth it, it doesn't give you enough points to make any difference and its not very exciting to look at.
Gameplay:
You will race through a series of tracks in the main game, to clear the track you will need to reach a certain level of "stars" that are obtained by doing many things.
You can receive stars by: drifting, truck smashing (hitting another truck, the harder the hit the bigger the star amount), flying through the air, tree running (going really fast through a series of tries, and flying through hoops, and by doing tricks. You will also receive bonus stars based on what position you finish the race in, for example, if you win first place you will get 50 stars. I'm pretty sure I got them all, but maybe one or two escaped me.
Multiplayer:
The only multiplayer available is 2 player split screen... I don't usually complain about the lack of multiplayer but come on... 2 player split screen? Not 4? And NO online or even LAN play? I promised i'd never used these complains about the system, and you've probably heard this line a million times but... "If Nintendo wants to compete seriously for the next generation they are going to need to develop games that have online play."
Other things:
The game doesn't have very many tracks, so you can finish the main game in a day, maybe 2 if you take your time. There are other things you can unlock if you go back and replay that tracks and acquire even MORE stars, but this comes off as more annoying than fun.
I just recently unlocked the next difficulty level, and I don't think I am going to be trying it...
If you have a Wii, and you are looking for some games to begin your collection, and you don't mind your games a little short, I would recommend excite truck as the perfect start.
