donnatheo's Full Review: Excite Truck for Nintendo Wii
We got the Wii for Christmas this year and Excite truck was one of the first games we chose. Excite truck is a simulated driving interaction game in an off-road-free-for all that involves trucks rocketing through ever changing terrain. The racing done with your truck is completely unrealistic but so much fun it makes you want to go off-roading. My family played this game in a large group. One or two of us would play while the others sat and cheered. We had a lot of fun.
Players rocket their trucks across dynamically changing terrain in this speed challenging, jumping game. Showing the Wii Remote controller's versatility, players tilt the controller on its side to turn it into a wireless steering wheel!
Rated E for Everyone- but there is some mild violence. It is a two player game. There is no online option for this game. There is no story mode for this game. You can unlock more challenging tracks but does not take very long for the serious gamer.
Customizing your truck is limited. The color is just about the only thing you can customize.
The features of the game as listed at Nintendo.com are:
Body movement: During the old days with regular controllers your body would get involved with landing the truck or the bike-but had not effect on the game. Now with the new wii wireless remote your body movement does effect how your truck lands a huge jump? All body moves actually affect the game in Excite Truck.
Controller as a Steering Wheel: Players hold the Wii Remote like an NES controller to control the truck. The 2 button is the accelerator, the 1 button is the brake, the + Control Pad is the turbo... but that's just the beginning. Tilt the Wii Remote controller right and left like a steering wheel to steer. Once the truck goes airborne, tilt the Wii Remote controller every which way to line up the wheels for landing boosts.
Dynamic Terrain: Pick up items on the courses to make the terrain deform in real time, turning innocent bumps into massive launch pads that affect not only the player's route, but that of his or her rivals. Players jump and bump their way to the highest score and highest finish.
Each race is based on a star system. The more stars you get by performing awesome stunts and challenges the better your ranking. Getting more stars is not easy. You only have a certain amount of time to get your points. This makes it more interesting but harder. You have to take risks and challenges by traversing through forests, launching off of jumps, smashing other trucks, taking daring curves and more. You need to do all this and stay in first place in order to get your stars. The challenging part is not overheating your truck. Waiting for your truck to cool off when it overheats is frustrating for some drivers. You cant do anything during this waiting time and some of my kids did not like this.
The remote that comes with the Wii console is the steering wheel center bar. You tilt it to the right or left to turn. The remote sensor is sent to the Bluetooth sensor on the bottom of your television set. You can also tilt the steering wheel forward or pull back to get the good landing. You can also spin in the air by pushing one end of the remote
You can change the music in your Excite truck game by downloading an MP3 -so you can listen to whatever makes you drive faster. This is a real bonus for some people who have said they did not like the music in the excite truck game.
We played this game as a family. It is much easier for adults to use the new wii steering wheel than using a regular classic controller to play. My brother, who is a serious gamer, did not like the wii remote controller for Excite truck, he wanted to go back to the classic controller for this -but you are not able to. My four year old nephew and my 70 year old father had no problems with the wii remote and totally loved it during this game.
I have some friends that decided they wanted to rent this game before buying it. They decided that they liked it enough to buy, but only after they bought Zelda and Raymon's Raving Rabbids. Excite Truck is a great game, but probably not a first choice for people that like more of an adventure story mode game. Excite truck will be loved by racing enthusiasts.
