StarSoldier1's Full Review: Excite Truck for Nintendo Wii
Although the name sounds pretty bad (Excite Truck is a pretty good name from a 5th grader at least), this semi-sequel to the NES classic Excitebike hit is still one damn fine racing title that introduced us Wii owners to a whole new way to play these type of arcade-like driving games.
In this very intense 3D racer you try to out run the competition while surviving the dangerous off road environments just like a million other video games out there. Before you dismiss it the game though it has this cool way to move your truck around. Holding the Wii-mote to the side with two hands like a old fashion controller will let you to steer left and right depending how hard it tilts. It definitely takes some getting use to because it's easy to over do turns but once you get it down the new interactive controls really make me feel I'm part of the redneck racing here. I even created a truck that looks like the General Lee from Dukes of Hazzard just for fun.
Also unlike most games of this type you need to win these races by scoring enough Star points instead of just coming in first place. You score these Stars by going crazy stuff like jumping through air hoops, successfully driving around trees, ramming into the other drivers, doing drifts, and lots more junk that would get me arrested again in real life.
Fans of the first NES game still have the chance to boost your vehicle for a extra burst of speed and you can do this as long you don't over heat. The awesome thing about this is the ability to find short cuts like driving in water to instantly cool down and the game's different power ups can help you here too. You can either get stuff like temporary invincibility and even something that alters the environment to reveal more jumps on track in one of the game's better effects.
The graphics are pretty good here with a great list of scenic countries to drive and destroy through but I did notice a lot of pop up when you jump high in the air so it isn't perfect. Other thing that bugged me was the very generic rock music here (fortunately, you can add your own unique tracks with a STD card if you like). The sound effects are much better with loud engine noises and crashes to help liven things up.
Excite Truck sure takes some getting to used thanks to the new controls and it sucks that it can only be played with up to 2 players via split screen too (can't we system link this sucker yet?) but once you learn it the game is insanely fast and hell of a lot of fun here.
