| silverdolphin's Full Review: Exergen Temporal Scanner Infrared Thermometer |
With a two-year-old who stubbornly refuses to sit and let me take her temperature either by underarm, or by mouth, and did not like grandpa's thermoscan in the ear--taking a temperature reading had become a battle ground. Something you don't desire when one is not feeling good and don't want to be bothered anyhow. So I needed something that was quick, easy to use, non-invasive, and above all accurate. The Exergen Temporal Artery Scanner has it all!
I started researching thermometers atleast a year before I bought this one and no others ever struck me to try them. A little known fact about the in-ear thermometers is that you are not supposed to use them on infants under 6 months due to sticking something in their ear and the reading is very unreliable at this age...something in their finer print. I found the temporal scanner available at Babies-R-us for $49.99. Great buy compared to when I saw it online a year ago as well as against other types of thermometers! It does seem a bit much even at this price, but when you have young children and infants it is worthwhile--especially while they are sleeping--you don't wake them up!
To Use: You remove a protective cap from the lense where the infrared reading takes place. Depress the button and place in middle of forehead where the probe is flush against the skin. While keeping the button depressed, slide it across the forehead to the hairline. Beeping indicates whether or not it is still finding any higher temperatures. It retains the reading for 30 seconds after you release the button. It automatically turns off in 30 seconds after last use to save the battery life or it can be manually turned off by pressing the button again. That is it!!
As with all new technology, especially a thermometer you want to know if it reliable...
Accuracy: Per the instruction booklet...it measures the temperature of the skin surface over the temporal artery, a major artery of the head. This artery is the only artery close enough to the skin surface to provide access needed for such an accurate reading. For further details and information please refer to www.exergen.com. I compared repeatedly with traditional methods of getting a temperature reading: oral, underarm, rectal, and the temporal scanner won every time. You do have to make sure you have the probe flush against the skin as you scan the forehead but that is it when it comes to getting the right reading. If your forehead is sweaty from fever (this will cool down the temperature as it should), scan again while keeping the button depressed then "nestle" it right behind the earlobe and read. This is also accurate.
The thermometer comes with a protective cap for the probe, instruction booklet, one 9 volt alkaline battery, and some include a free educational CD-ROM. The latter I have not used yet, but it was included in my package. The booklet gives multiple references of the studies performed on its accuracy which is another thing that I found helpful and impressive. One last note, the very first time I used it, I had just put the battery in, and it kept giving me a "Err", meaning error, on its digital display and would not read. Referring back to the instructions it specifically states to be sure the battery is tightly connected. Well that fixed that small problem! My 2-yr old is so much happier about getting her temperature read and I can get a quick, accurate reading on my newborn too without all the fuss!!
