Exergen Temporal Scanner Thermometer - No more sticking it in the ear.

Written: Nov 20 '03
Pros:Accurate readings, quick and easy to use.
Cons:None.
The Bottom Line: A great investment in knowing you are getting the most accurate temperature reading, especially when it comes to your children.

During my children's latest illnesses, I found myself taking their temperatures many, many times, unfortunately waking them up while attempting to use the ear thermometer. I heard that the temporal thermometers were finally available to the public and had my husband go and get one, this way the children wouldn't be too disturbed when getting their temperatures taken. They had used one on my youngest when he was in the hospital in the beginning of the year and the nurse just raved about it.

The Exergen Temporal Scanner has been a godsend! It's claimed to be more accurate than the ear thermometers, by the company and doctors, and as close to what the reading for rectal temperatures would be and can be used for children or adults, just like the ear thermometers.

How it works

Unlike other thermometers, this one captures the temperature from the temporal artery, located along the forehead and it takes the temperature about 1000 times per second, recording the highest temperature. Then, at the same time, it measures the ambient temperature of the room where you're taking the temperature. Then it uses its patented software, arterial heat balance, and synthesizes the two readings and determines the accurate body temperature. Sounds complicated, but it does this all in seconds.

Use

Using it is very simple too. Take off the protective lens cover, place the probe in the center of the forehead, flush against the skin, press the scan button and hold it in as you slide it across the forehead until you reach the hairline, release the scan button and check the reading. It is very important to keep the probe flat against the skin while sliding it to get an accurate reading. If the forehead is sweaty, after you slide it across the forehead, don't let go of the button and also touch the neck just behind the ear lobe before letting go of the button. The thermometer will automatically shut off after thirty seconds, if you don't want to wait, just press the scan button once and it will shut off.

It turned out that my youngest had ear infections in both ears, so even though he wasn't complaining about it, it was hurting him when we used the ear thermometer. With the Exergen Temporal Scanner I was able to take his temperature in the middle of the night to keep an eye on his temperature and not disturb him, in fact he never woke up once and I think I took his temperature about four times from the time he went to sleep and when I went to sleep. Not only does it work well for young children, it can be used on older children and adults too with accurate results. My ten year old has bronchitis and is on antibiotics now, but before he went to the doctor, I was able to sneak into his room when he was sleeping and take his temperature without waking him up, I could never do that with the ear thermometer, and he's a light sleeper.

The Exergen Temporal Scanner runs on a 9 volt battery, that is included in the package, so there is nothing extra to buy before using it. If the lens starts to get dirty, just take a cotton swab with some rubbing alcohol on it and wipe the lens. Because it uses infrared sensors, it's important to keep the lens clean, so remember to put the lens cover on when not using it, it will save you from having to clean it so often.

Recommendation

I definitely recommend the Exergen Temporal Scanner to anyone who is tired of using the ear thermometers. It works great for infants, children and adults, so why have different thermometers in the house, when one will do? At just $49, it's a great investment and you will feel better knowing you are getting an accurate temperature reading, especially when it comes to your children.
