I had heard some horror stories about trying to take a baby's temperature from my friends. When I was placing items on my own registry, I stumbled across the Exergen Temporal Thermometer and I was intrigued. I received this thermometer and I have been happy with the product. I do not have any "horror" stories about taking a my son's temperature the way some of my friends do -- and for that, my household is grateful!

WHAT IS THE EXERGEN TEMPORAL THERMOMETER?
According to the company, the "Exergen Temporal Thermometer is a non-invasive thermometer that measures the balance between the tissues warming from arterial blood and the tissues cooling (or warming) caused by heat loss (or gain)." The product is designed to scan across a person's forehead and determine the temperature. According to a Harvard Medical School Study, this thermometer has been proven to be even more accurate than ear thermometers (Harvard Medical School Hospital for Sick Children Study).
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
According to the research I conducted while looking for an accurate and non-invasive thermometer for our soon to be born son, the best place to measure a person's temperature is via the heart. This is info we received from my husband's sister, who is a medical doctor. She furthered explained that this truly can only be done under a doctor's care (which, I think is a blessing, since measuring that way sounds rather scary and very invasive!). Voila! Exergen developed this thermometer to get this kind of accurate reading in an non-invasive way. Measurement of blood temperature via a major artery gives a true reflection on a person's actual temperature. She explained why, but she lost me after about thirty seconds. This thermometer works by scanning the the forehead and gauging the temporal artery (which is directly connected to your heart via your head). My sister-in-law made this all seem very simple and non-medical, and she said that she believed that this product was certainly worth trying. What mattered most to me is that it sounded easy and painless -- for both me and my son!
HOW DOES THIS THERMOMETER ACTUALLY WORK?
The thermometer works by using infrared technology and a patented software system to measure the arterial balance. The "tip" of the thermometer has a "probe" which measures this balance. It is a two-fold process, and once which I think is best explained by the company itself. Below I have paraphrased parts of the directions, which explains how this thermometer actually reads your temperature:
The first part: The thermometer scans the forehead like a video camera by capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at around 1,000 frames per second. It locks in the highest temperature it senses.
The second part: The thermometer then uses a system (which is patented by Exergen) that measures the ambient temperature of the forehead. The arterial heart balance software included in the thermometer synthesizes the two readings together into your body temperature.
HOW DO WE USE IT EXACTLY?
Using this thermometer is so simple! To take your child's (or anyone else) temperature, you simply slide/scan the thermometer lightly across the forehead (starting midway between the hairline and the eyebrow) going towards the left side, while you hold down a button located on the body of the thermometer. You will hear a series of beeps and see a red LED light, and when you get to the "end" of the forehead, you look at the LCD display to find the temperature. That's it! This is the main reason why I like this thermometer so much. You do not have to deal with using a rectal thermometer, an under-arm thermometer or ear, or an under-the-tongue one!
Since this thermometer isn't invasive, you never have to worry about causing your baby any kind discomfort. You can even use this on a sleeping baby -- it is really that simple. I have done this many times in the past and it has really been a life (or should I say night) saver!
Please note that when using this thermometer, you should be aware that if the one side of your baby's head has been on a pillow, then that side will be warmer. We made this mistake a few times, and received a high temperature. After going to the MD, our pediatrician asked if our son was wearing heavy clothing or blanket. All of those times, he was laying down with a blanket covering part of his head. This is why we received a higher temperature for those times. We then went back to the manual online and saw that Exergen gives a warning about this. You will get a higher reading on the side that was in contact with a pillow, blanket, bedding, etc. Also, any kind of covering that would cause the heat from dissapating would also contrubute to a higher temperature. A "covering" could be a hat or hair.
WHAT ARE THE DETAILS ABOUT THIS PRODUCT?
Puchase Locations and Pricing
The Exergen Temporal Thermometer can be purchased at many brick and mortar stores (Babies R US; Walgreens' Target; Walmart) and online retailers (costco.com; baby.com; babiesrus.com; drugstore.com). It retails for approximately $50.00 U.S..
The package includes the thermometer, a 9V battery, a protective cap (which I lost thirteen months ago and cannot seem to find), and a user's manual. This product is made in the U.S.A.. The "body" is a whitish color and the button and probe are blue-ish. There is a small LCD display where you can read the temperature. This is located on the body of the thermometer. There are no probe covers needed for this product and it can be cleaned with a damp cloth. I usually "rinse" it with a paper towel with some hydrogen peroxide on it.
We have used this thermometer since our son first came home from the hospital. We have never had any major problems. Occasionally we do receive an "Err" message on the LCD display and we will have to re-scan his forehead. It has been easy to use and my son has never, ever complained about having his temperature taken. Since our own pediatrician uses this thermometer, he does not know what it is like to have his temperature taken in his ear, underarm, or anywhere else. In fact, our son now likes to take his own temperature. It is very funny when he does this: he takes the thermometer from our hands and scans it across his forehead and then looks at the display. Then he insists on taking ours! It's very cute when he does this and we have snapped many a picture. Maybe he will follow in his aunt's footsteps and become a doctor! Who knows!
I would like to say that you will sometimes get an error message if the thermometer jumps over the skin (if it is clammy or your hand jumps). You need to have a steady hand and smooth, not damp skin to get a good reading.
Our thermometer as always given us accurate readings and we have never had a problem. A few times when my husband was sick, he used a "regular" thermometer. Then he would use the Exergen to see the difference and a few times there was a difference -- the "regular" one said that he didn't have a fever and the Exergen said he did. After going to the MD, he discovered each time that the Exergen one was the thermometer with the accurate reading.
OUR BOTTOM LINE
We have been very happy with this product and have no issues with it. The battery life has held up well (my son will be 2 in six months) and it has been dropped more times that I care to admit or acknowledge. It has held up well to that, too! In our opinion, it is a great way to take your child's (or your own) temperature in non-invasive, extremely accurate way. Plus, you only need ONE HAND! Also, you do not have to deal with a struggling, screaming child! Yippee!!! We would never use anything else!
