Send Them Back Into Exile

Written: Apr 22 '01
Pros:Good story, great characters
Cons:Too much going on, too many points of view
The Bottom Line: Don't read it. It is not very well organized. It becomes a lengthy, confusing undertaking. Just about the time you get into a character the point of view changes.

Although I like this authors style, and I love the characters she has created, I wish I had quit with the second novel. It was really the best one.

The real problem with this book is that there is too much going on. There is probably two books here. One dealing with Doyce and Jenret and one dealing with the first seeker pair--Matty and Kharm. There are several points of view and the switching back and forth can be confusing and frustrating. Doyce and Jenret are split up each one with there own story, Bard, a seeker who lost his twin in the last novel, reappears with his own adventure, Haarp, a seeker-shepherd, has his own adventure and there are couple more people who have their own stories plus that of Matty and Kharm. You are also treated to some of the enemies point of views, like the witch-woman Hylan and Baz, head of the Reapers. With all these points of views and stories it begins to bog the reader down.

I still love her characterizations. You get a real good feel for Matty and Kharm. Doyce and Jenret stay true to form, and you even get a feel for a couple of their enemies Hylan, and Baz.

The plot is that since the people of Canderis have discovered the Resonants among them, they have begun to worry about the possibility of the mind-readers stealing their minds. Many people have joined Reaper groups which kill all Resonants--regardless. Doyce and the seekers are trying to bring the people together before things get really bad. Plus Doyce is pregnant with Jenret's child. Jenret rushes off to help the Resonants and gets captured. Also they decide that if the Marchmont king will make an appearance in Canderis, it might help the relations, of the countries and of Resonants and Normals. Doyce also travels in the past through the help of the Ghatti. She relives Matty and Kharm's, first seeker pair, adventures since there could be a clue to helping the future in the past. There are also many side plots and conflicts taking place, which all very neatly wrap up at the end.

I just think there were too many side plots and point of views. It becomes distracting and you lose the point of the plot. I think the second novel was the best of this trilogy and I would not even suggest reading this one.
