Look George the crystals float! “When did you change the litter box last?” “Last week, about six days ago,” George (my husband) informs me. George and I have been Tidy Cat Crystal advocates for many months. Tidy cat works and it works well beyond what the company promises. The fact remains that Tidy Cat Crystals is a bit high priced. When we went to Pet Smart we noticed ExquisiCat Pearl Fresh. The ExquisiCat is sold in a large 7.2-L bottle for $13.99. The Tidy cat at Pet Smart had gone up a dollar to $10.99 for a 3.8-L box. We figured what the heck it is cheaper with all the litter boxes we have to change let’s give it a try.
Broken down price per liter Tidy Cat that sells in most stores for $9.99 a 3.8 L box. That breaks down to $2.60 a liter. The ExquisiCat sells for $13.99 a bottle and that breaks down to $1.94 a liter. With the dollar coupon that comes in the Tidy Cat box you can purchase it for as little as $8.99 which breaks down to $2.36 a liter. The ExquisiCat Pearl Fresh is cheaper. But is it really?
The Tidy Cat crystals even with all our animals needed to be changed only once a month. We only needed to change the litter boxes once a month. We have one very endearing unusual animal that pees a lot! When we filled his litter box with the ExquisiCat I walked in the walk-in closet where he resides and the crystals were literally floating. So much for absorbency! This may not be fair to compare two crystal litters with “my unusual” pet, so lets compare with the proper usage, cats!
When using the Tidy Cat for the first three weeks there was no odor in the house what so ever! The fourth week there would be some odor but even then nothing close to the odor a conventional litter would be at in only three days usage. After the fifth day of using the ExquisiCat crystals my daughter walked into the house and says “Mom, I hate to be mean but the house really smells bad!” Even her picky little nose couldn’t pick up any odor when we had used the Tidy Cat. We still had two full bottles of ExquisiCat left so we figured we use it until the end of the month when we shopped again. Wrong idea. A short while ago we couldn’t take it any longer. We collected a couple Tidy Cat coupons we had laying around the house and went and picked up two boxes of Tidy Cat. Now we know we will not have any odor problems until we change the boxes again around the first. Maybe the left over ExquisiCat will make good material under potting soil. Then again maybe not!
The ExquisiCat Pearl Fresh is an innovation of Petsmart. It is advertised as low tracking. It only tracked in a two-room radius of the litter boxes. I frankly don’t understand how two silica-based litters can be so different. Yes, even with the Tidy Cat we had some tracking problem, (those little crystals hurt when you step on them!) But the ExquisiCat got all over the house. I was very curious at this point. What could be the difference? One of our cats, Molly, loves to sculpt in her litter box. She can sculpt for ten minutes before she even pees. Then an additional ten minutes afterwards. When she sculpts in the ExquisiCat the crystals fly all over. The differences: the Tidy Cat is much smaller at least two to three times as small as the ExquisiCat. The ExquisiCat is a much bigger crystal than the Tidy Cat and is much lighter in weight than the Tidy Cat. The Tidy Cat is much denser. The ExquisiCat is much more opaque than the Tidy Cat. I can see through the Tidy Cat and I can’t see through the ExquisiCat litter. The Tidy Cat is much clearer. The Tidy cat also has those little blue crystals, which seems to be the main secret to the great odor control capabilities.
The instructions for the use of ExquisiCat are basically the same as Tidy Cat. You pour about two to two and a half inches of ExquisiCat into a clean and sanitized litter box. Remove solid waste frequently. Mix the pearls by shaking gently each time you remove the solid waste. If your cat doesn’t like the new crystals mix it with some of your old litter. I tried that with our “unusual” pet and found that mixing clay litter and the new crystal litter really ruined the absorbency of the crystals.
The ingredients in the ExquisiCat are silica sand, oxygen and water. It has a warranty of if your not completely satisfied return the unused portion to place of purchase for a full refund. Humm...not a bad idea and a copy of my Tidy Cat Review and my ExquisiCat review ;)
I’m not satisfied with ExquisiCat Pearl Fresh in any way shape or form I am a dissatisfied customer. The ExquisiCat does not live up to its promises. Tidy Cat Crystals work great. Far better than the ExquisiCat, clay litters, clumping litters and any other litter we have used. The only thing we have found good about ExquisiCat is that the empty bottle works great as a bathroom wastebasket. Thanks for reading~~~~~djgeiger :)
