| jdornoff's Full Review: Extended Stay West Valley Utah |
Background: My wife and I were going to attend the Celtic Woman concert being held at the E-Center in West Valley, Utah on May 12th. Because my wife’s work starts at 6:00AM we decided to spend that night at a motel close to the E-Center so she could be in bed while people were still fighting to get out of the parking lot. I booked a room at the Extended Stay America in West Valley which actually boarders the south end of the E-Center parking lot. Booking: I booked the room on the Extended Stay website for $59.99 a night for that one night. I checked such sites as Hotwire and Travelocity but the Extended Stay website remained the best price. The Hotel: As mentioned the motel sits to the south of the E-Center right next to Interstate 215. The building is “L” shaped, three stories w/ elevator, and is about as “cookie cutter” as you can get. Extended Stay America 2310 West City Center Ct. West Valley City, UT 84119 801-886-2400 Check In: I arrived at the hotel about 3:15pm since the hotel says you can check in at 3:00pm. Checking in was no problem although the lady manning the front counter was not very friendly. She asked in a condescending tone if I knew how to use those outdated hole punched key cards. The Room: I believe this once was another brand of hotel as the room does look like it was converted from a standard room, but was better than that horrific place we stayed at in Midvale, Utah back in 2005. As you entered the room the kitchen was to the left of the door and the bathroom to the right. Once you enter the main part of the room you have the queen sized bed to the right with a desk to its right and a nightstand to the left which included a digital clock. Along the wall to the left was another desk followed by a dresser with a 27” television followed by a closet area that included a wire rack to hang clothes and a place to put suit cases, but not an actual suitcase rack. The bathroom was standard fair with a tub to the right, vanity on the left side and the toilet in the middle. The bathroom was actually rather cramped and look like it was straight out of Motel 6. There was not much of a view out the window as it looks onto parked cars and the on ramp to Interstate 215. Nearby:
There are several chain restaurants in the area including Cracker Barrel which is right next door. There is also a Denny’s, Applebees, Chili’s, Subway, IHOP, Ruby Tuesday, Puck Restaurant and Bar and Training Table restaurants all within walking distance. For those like me who don’t want boring chain restaurants (that you could visit at home) when traveling (besides the Training Table that is a Utah chain) there are several independent restaurants along 3500 South. Finally there is also a large movie theater just a block away on Decker Lake Drive. The nearest fast food place is Burger King at the corner of Redwood Road (1700 West) and 3500 South which is located about ¾ of a mile east of the motel. There is also a grocery store and 7/11 near this location plus some additional restaurants. West Valley Mall is just on the other side of Interstate 215 from the motel but I would not recommend you walk to the mall as you will be taking your life into your own hands as traffic is extremely bad in the area. Also note that the neighborhood is gang infested so while the immediate area is ok, avoid walking more than a couple of blocks from the motel after dark. Problems: The first problem that I noticed was that two of the three light sconces in the room had burned out bulbs. If we were staying more than just one quick night I probably would have asked for a different room. Also as you can tell by the description there is no table in the room to eat at. Your only choice is to eat on one of the two desks that face away from each other so couples have to eat looking away from each other, and in fact looking at the walls. Third I think sleeping on the ground would have been more comfortable than the bed. It was rock hard. Plus there are only two small pillows which just did not cut it. Finally you have the trouble with traffic. If you do decide to stay here be sure to ask for a room that faces either to the north or east which would put you away from the Interstate. Our room directly faced the northbound on ramp to the freeway so you could hear noise most of the night. Internet: Like most Extended Stays they offered wireless service for $4.99 for your stay. For anyone staying more than a couple of days this is a good deal but for a single day it just did not make any sense. However, there are two other hotels nearby plus the e-center so it is possible you could pick of a signal from one of the locations but since I didn’t bother to bring my laptop, I could not check it out. Check Out: Because we left before the office opened at 7:00AM, we were instructed to either put the keys under the gate to the office or leave them in the room which is what we decided to do and no issues arose. Overall: This was the worst (and only really bad Extended Stay) that I have exprienced.
I would not stay at this hotel unless you want to be near the E-Center and then I would either choose the Crystal Inn or Baymont and pay a few more dollars. The only advantage this place has is that it is convenient to Interstate 215 and not that far away from the Salt Lake Airport. However, there are better places in the area and you probably would not face an indifferent staff, burned-out bulbs, bare bones room, traffic noise, and a bed that makes the floor feel real comfortable.
Thanks to SurgRN911 (Di) for quickly adding another one to the database for me.
