I like spending outdoor time with my little girl but I used to limit our time in the yard because I often worried that she would wander off and hurt herself. A recent purchase of a containment device- the Superyard XT- changed all of that and my worries greatly diminished. However, I quickly realized that the opening of this hexagon- shaped gate was too small and my little girl needed some more space. I knew that the manufacturer offered an extension gate because I remembered seeing it in the store. I went back to the store one day later and purchased the Superyard XT Extension Kit, an addition for the Superyard XT portable gate from North States.

Facts About This Product:

Superyard XT Extension Kit is similar in design to the Superyard XT. It is intended as an extension for the six- sided gate. The extension kit contains two panels measuring 26 inches (66 cm) in height and 32 inches (81 cm) in width. The two panels are already attached on one end when you open the box. Added to the original Superyard XT, the result is an expanded, eight-sided play area that offers 34.5 square feet of space.

How to Use:

The Superyard XT Extension Kit can be joined to the original gate by first lifting up one panel and then placing the opening over the pin in the second panel; placing the pin into the slot located on the side of the blue cylindrical shaped joint; and then pushing down on the first panel and upward on the second panel (the one with the cylinder) until the two pieces have snapped in place.

Superyard XT Extension Kit is constructed from heavy duty, weather resistant plastic that is easy to clean with mild detergent and water. The extension panels are designed to be sturdy and long- lasting.

Final Thoughts:

Superyard XT is an excellent product from North States and mine has received a good deal of usage during the summer season. I wrote a review of this gate yesterday (follow the link at the end of the review) and one of the very few cons I could think of for this product was the small area that it covers. With all six panels of the Superyard XT securely in place, the ground area it surrounds covers only 18.5 square feet. Unless a child is very little or has very few toys, this gate isn’t really large enough to handle more than two kids or one kid with lots of toys.

With the Superyard XT Extension Kit, however, the main problem with the Superyard is eliminated. The original gate is hexagonal in shape so with the two panels added, it becomes octagonal in shape (like a stop sign) and, most importantly, the ground area is increased from 18.5 square feet to 34.5 square feet. This is a substantial increase for only adding two panels. It doesn’t seem like two additional panels would make much difference but the difference is highly noticeable.

Superyard XT Extension Kit increases the total panels to eight. Most people will use the full, eight- sided gate in order to get the greatest amount of space. But since there are now eight sides, parents can get more creative. One possibility is to make two smaller, four sided play areas consisting of one panel on each side. There will only be about 6.5 square feet inside each of these squares but this might work depending on the size of the baby. This square shaped configuration might make a good containment device for infants on the inside of the house.

Superyard XT Extension Kit is made from the same heavy duty plastic as the Superyard itself. It can withstand any type of weather, is easy to clean, and transfers easily from place to place thanks to the fact that the panels can be folded. This extension kit folds in half and, when added to the regular gate, folds up and fits in a relatively small space. The panels do have a certain amount of thickness (about one inch each) so when all eight panels are folded, there will be eight inches (20.5 cm) of total thickness. This isn’t much, but it means that the gate will not fit in a space that is too compact.

The Superyard XT Extension Kit offers the same 26 inch- high panels that you get with the regular gate. This means it is good for most youngsters up to the age of approximately two years. It can also be used for pets but just like with small kids, there is a limit to the gates usefulness. Pets that are too large and kids that are too big will be able to jump or climb over the gate with little effort. It is fine for little kids and pets and its height is just right for adults to step over but it won’t be useful for larger kids or larger dogs.

Superyard XT is an excellent containment device but its size limits its usefulness. With the Superyard XT Extension Kit, however, the space is increased substantially and for this reason, I highly recommend buying this kit as an addition to the Superyard XT. The additional space will make it much easier to place two or more kids and toys inside the confines of this safety gate, adding greatly to the children’s enjoyment.
