Seagate 250GB External Drive: A Vault to Safeguard Your Data

Pros:Easy plug and play, large capacity, affordable price
The Bottom Line: Would you cry if your computer crashed and you lost all your digital photos, music, and documents? Back 'em up with an affordable portable hard drive!
Computers are cheap these days and so are all the handy dandy little electronic devices that fill our lives with data. You can get an iPod to fill with digital music for as little as $50, and a $100 digital camera today spits out 7.2 megapixel images that eat up storage space faster than a good ole Georgia boy choking down barbecue spare ribs.

Yes indeed, even your average Joe Schmoe computer illiterate can chomp up massive amounts of storage, saving all their JPG photos of summer vacations --- not to mention their MP3 library of classic Elvis tunes.
Fortunately for all of us collectors of digital trash and treasures, massive hard disks have shrunk to tiny sizes and brought tiny price tags along with them. Today, you can buy plug and play hard disks for your laptop that have so much memory on them they could have single-handedly powered a good-size corporate data center not very many years ago.
The Need for Backup...
My home computer might be a cheap model that I'd never cry about if a thief broke in tonight and stole it, but the data is another story. The thousands of JPG pictures I've got of my kids and every vacation over the past 10 years are worth many times more to me than the price of a computer. The thousands of songs that I've painstakingly copied off hundreds of original CDs and then cataloged in my home-rolled mySQL database are worth the price of DOZENS of computers.
I wouldn't cry about losing my computer, but a data loss would be catastrophic to me. That's why I back up EVERYTHING that's important to me: photos, music library, and of course, copies of all my consumerly helpful Epinions reviews of cheap luxury travel in Latin America, smokin' hot latin music, and deliciously robust craft-brewed beers.
Considering that the Seagate 250 GB external portable hard drive was on sale at my clean, friendly local Target store for the low price of just $69.95, I bought TWO...not only will I make a backup of all my files, I'll do a redundant backup that I can store off-site (which I define as "in Grandma's house"....I'd store another at my brother's house, but he'd probably erase my files and fill the disk with porn).
About the Seagate 250 GB External Portable Hard Drive...
This hard drive is a real beauty! It looks good, it's non-intrusive, it's easy to install and use, and it gets better grades on reliability metrics than many other large portable drives.
The drive is so small and lightweight that it's easy to just slip into your briefcase or backpack when you're off to the office or school. It's only a half-inch high and not much larger than a pack of cigarettes. Doesn't weigh any more than the pack of cigarettes either and it won't give you lung cancer. I can actually fit this drive into my shirt pocket or inside coat pocket.
If it weren't for the small green LED at the back of the unit, you'd never even know the drive was working --- it is just TOTALLY silent. I've got one running right now, just a foot away from me, but I can't hear it at all.
Best of all, Seagate doesn't fill the drive with junk software you don't want or need. Not so much as one single piece of rubbish-ware!! I LOVE IT!!
Operation is simple: it's just a USB connection to the computer. That's it! The Seagate portable drives from about a year ago used a Y-type USB cable that required 2 USB ports, but that's an annoyance of the past with this current-generation drive --- just one port. It's truly "plug and play".
Good thing it is honestly plug and play because the documentation STINKS. There's just one fold-out piece of paper in the box that shows a diagram of plugging the unit into a computer's USB port, and then the back has, in no fewer than TWENTY languages (I counted...used every finger and toe too), a message thanking you for buying a Seagate drive and pointing you to their web site if you want ANY other information. Fortunately, my experience is that the drive is pretty idiot proof.
Performance-wise, the drive is a 5400 RPM mechanism, and while there are faster drives on the market, I find the real-world performance of this drive to be excellent. I've experienced no lag times in end user response and even when I've copied over entire folders with tens of megabytes of files in them, the drive finished its work within a few wall clock seconds. A geek with a stopwatch might find fault with the unit's relative performance to the market's fastest drives, but let's be for real, today's hard disks are FAR better performers than they really need to be for the average consumer, and considering how across-the-board excellent the Seagate drive is, any nit-picking is really errant pedantry.
LOVE my little Seagate 250 GB external portable hard disk!! It's a high quality device that looks good, is easy to use, and that I can count on to safeguard my most precious personal data.
