| drdevience's Full Review: Extra Billy's Barbecue |
If you're in Richmond and craving that midwestern type of BBQ, look no further than Extra Billy's Barbecue on Broad street near Willow Lawn Shopping Center. This is a big circular affair with windows everywhere. The mostly dark wood decor makes the place very warm and inviting.
You will be greeted very quickly here by a down-home kinda gal full of smiles. They have both smoking and non-smoking sections. The tables are big ol' solid wood like your Grandmother might have had out in her yard for summer reunions. Checkered tablecloths abound.
I've been here several times and have never been disappointed with the waitstaff. They are all very down-to-earth and friendly. Drinks are kept fresh without having to flag anyone down. Big plus.
Being from the mid-west, Texas specifically, I have a hard time finding what I term real BBQ in the Richmond area. What you get in these parts is some vinegary tastin' stuff and they always put coleslaw on the sandwiches! What is up with that? Ick! Thank heavens for Extra Billy's Barbecue. They know what's up with true BBQ. Smokey and slathered with BBQ sauce. Ooooh yeah! The genuine hickory pit smoked Baby Back Ribs are succulent at $13.95 for a full rack and $10.95 for a half rack. Get the full rack, these reheat real well! That comes with 2 side orders, or for an extra $2.50 you can go for the vegetable & fruit bar. Regular ribs are only $7.95 with the same options.
It ain't all about ribs though.. they also have chicken, pork, sausages, and beef brisket..or try a combination of those. Prime rib and other cuts of steak are available and come out perfectly cooked to order. The Prime rib will run you about $13.95 for 12 oz. and you get a choice of Au Jus or horseradish sauce.
There is a bar so beer ($2.50), wine ($2.50/glass), and limited mix drinks are available.
This is a great place for families and kids are encouraged to be kids here... including the grown-up male types! There is a children's menu and you don't have to worry if they get a little loud. Relax. You men can feel free to belch to yer hearts content and drip sauce all over yer shirts with glee.
As far as Vegetarians, well, it's BBQ.. but the Vegetable and Fruit Bar is probably sufficient. Here you can make a salad with lots of extras, several wonderful fresh vegetables, and lots of great fresh fruit.
Before Famous Dave's hit town, Extra Billy's Barbecue was the only true smoked BBQ joint around. I like Famous Dave's, but Extra Billy's will always be my favorite here. I do recommend this if it's food drippin sauce you crave...ask for plenty of napkins!
