When Henry first came home, he had a little problem. If he had an accident in the house, he would eat stool, otherwise known as coprophagy. I learned that he was really doing this because he knew he wasnt supposed to do it in the house, and he was trying to get rid of the evidence. Then he got to where he wanted to do it outside as well. Not only was this an embarrassing habit, but not a very healthy one either.
So, I had to get this habit broken, so while looking in the Drs. Foster and Smith catalog, I came across some stuff called Dis-Taste, which would um
make the stool taste yucky and he wouldnt do it anymore. The stuff comes in powder, treat, or pill form, and there are different formulations for dogs by weight. I ended up with the tablet form and I got a 250 tablet bottle for $9.99.
Let me here give props to the folks online at Fosters and Smith- the directions for this stuff said to give one tablet for each 10 lbs of body weight for 2 weeks. But, Henry only weighed 4 lbs. so I was rather puzzled about how much to give. The website has a live chat feature so I just asked how much to give, and the representative said first to start off with a ˝ pill a day and if I did not see results after a few days switch up to 1 whole pill a day. So, thanks to them for clearing that up!
Now, if you give your pet a whole pill for 2 weeks and dont see results, then you can increase 2 two tablets once a day, but give one pill in the morning and one at night. Be sure to keep this bottle of pills away from kids and pets, because it doesnt have a child proof cap.
Now, I didnt have the complicated problem of figuring out whose stool was being eaten since Henry was eating his own, but if he were eating another dogs you would give it to that one instead of the one who is eating the stool.
The particular tablets we have are pretty small, and they are easy to cut up. I just stuck a ˝ tablet into a treat and Henry had no idea or no problem taking his tablet. I gave it in the morning and that afternoon he sniffed his stool and was like
.no way am I eating that and went on off. I went ahead and did the full regimen of 2 weeks of pills and since then he has not had a problem anymore. Now he wont even bother with trying to do it and hes not even on the pills.
Overall, something I would recommend if you have this problem- cured us right up with no side effects- um except the intended one that is.
