Whenever I have one of those headaches that makes me think fondly of guillotines, I reach for Extra Strength Excedrin.


Description, Cautions & Ingredients

Excedrin Extra Strength comes in several forms: caplets, coated tablets, and geltabs. I buy the coated caplets, which come with 250 pills in a plastic bottle. The pills are white and have an oval shape. Each pill has an E engraved into one side.

The bottle has a child-safe lid. It is easy to open, though. Just push down on the lid while turning it counter-clockwise.

Dosage: Adults and children 12 years or older can take 2 caplets every 6 hours. Do not take more than 8 caplets within a 24-hour period. For children younger than 12 years, consult a doctor before using this product.

This medicine is for the temporary relief of headaches, arthritis, muscular aches, sinusitis, toothaches, premenstrual or menstrual cramps, and the minor aches and pains associated with a cold.

As with all medications, there are warnings. Children or teenagers recovering from chicken pox or flu-like symptoms should not take Excedrin. Taking more of this medication than directed can cause liver damage. If pregnant or breast-feeding, consult a doctor before using this product. Do not take if you have had an allergic reaction to medication containing Acetaminophen or Asprin. Also ask a doctor before taking this medication if you have asthma, ulcers, bleeding problems, stomach problems, diabetes, gout or arthritis. Before using this product, consult a doctor if you consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks a day, or are taking a blood thinning medication. Keep out of the reach of children.

Ingredients: Active ingredients for each caplet includes Acetaminophen 250mg (pain reliever), Asprin 250mg (pain reliever), Caffeine 65mg (pain reliever aid).


My Experiences

For me, this is a wonder drug. Sometimes I get headaches that feel like my skull is cleaving in two. They are not migraines, but are incredibly painful. Thankfully I don’t get them all the time. Extra Strength Excedrin is the only pain reliever to vanquish these headaches. And it works quickly!

Even though the bottle says these pills are for sinusitis, I find that other medications work better for my sinus woes. I also do not take this product for aches and pains. This is solely a headache medication for me.

I am careful not to exceed the recommended dosage. The bottle says that should an overdose occur to call a poison control center. So I am very careful to keep track of when I take the pills. It is also recommended to drink a full glass of water with each dose.

These caplets are great for me. My throat is narrow, so I have trouble swallowing some round pills or large pills. These oval-shaped Excedrin caplets slide down my throat without fuss. I drink the recommended glass of water, too.

I don’t mind that this medication has caffeine in it. I don’t drink coffee or tea. Sometimes I’ll have a small piece of chocolate or a soda, but that doesn’t happen every day. The box says that a recommended dose of this product has about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. My body is fine with the amount of caffeine in these pills.

Summary

For headaches, Extra Strength Excedrin does the job ... and quickly! Within five or so minutes I feel relief, and few minutes later it is as though the headache never existed. This medicine is effective. A box is always in the house and at work.
