beverlee329's Full Review: Jonathan Safran Foer - Extremely Loud & Incredibly...
This tale is about a precocious boy who looks for the lock to a key he finds in his father's belongings. His father has died in the 9/11 attack and he treks all over the city in search for what his father kept a secret. The book trails his memories, thoughts and adventures.
Despite as another reviewer said, it's sad, self indulgent moments, I found it to be a creatively written story. It kept me turning the pages. The artistic use of visuals was also creative and kept me interested, although, "artistic use" can always be argued. Someone thought the pictures were disresepctful, but I find the pictures and books to be a surprising and refreshing use of visuals- a "picture book" for adults. In my opinion, the novel is not blatantly capitalizing on tragic events. Real life events affect art and vice versa. While Soafaer's other novel was also interesting and well written, it's text was too "tiring" for me to finish while I stayed up to read this one.
SOmeone also complained the ending was too simple. I found it satisfying. A book that I thought was more self indulgent was The Five People You Meet in Heaven and so many people give rave reviews for it. I find this one to be much more clever. Overall, it was an interesting, surprising, heart warming and well written novel.
