yusakugo's Full Review: OCZ Rally2 (4 GB) USB 2.0 Flash Drive (OCZUSBR2DC-...
Curious on getting a faster flash drive, the OCZ Rally drives came to mind. Unfortunately, only a few retailer sell OCZ products. Thankfully web retailers like NewEgg and ZipZoomFly carry their products.
The OCZ Rally flash drives have been hailed as some of the fastest flash drives around... consistently pounding the performance crud out of the competition. The Rally2 branded drives continue that tradition with a boasted maximum read speed of 28MB/sec and a write speed of 15MB/sec. If it reaches this level of performance, it pretty much beats all of the competition out there most especially in the read speed.
Price
At $80 or less, this drive is a steal compared to competition like with SanDisk Cruzer Micro and Cruzer Titantium. NewEgg often sells the drive for about $74 with a $5 S&H charge. There are rebates available for up to $18 most of the time.
Short Take
Not quite as sturdy as the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium but strong enough in its own right, the Rally2's claim to fame is the performance. There are very few drives that can even come close to the performance of the Rally2. Given that OCZ sells these drives at a very reasonable price (as low as $61 shipped and after mail-in rebate) which is competitive with the Cruzer Micro, the Rally2 is a definitely winner in my book.
Specs
The dimensions of the Rally2 is about 2 5/8" x 5/8". The Rally2 is made of a sturdy aluminum casing that did not show any flex when pressed on. The cap is also made of aluminum as well. The access LED on the tail is an orange color. I did not test for how water resistant the drive is. Note that OCZ does not advertise water resistance for the Rally2 drives.
The speed is claimed to be as high as 28MB/sec read and 15MB/sec write.
In the package you get a small lanyard with a thin filament hooking into the eyelet of the Rally2, an USB extension cable, and a drivers CD for Win98 systems.
Durability
Seems quite sturdy. I wouldn't try driving my car over it but I would feel comfortable throwing it into a bag with other heavy items like books and the such.
Performance
Here is the ticket. The Rally2 4GB is a true monster here. The average read speed is 25MB/sec with bursts up to 28MB/sec. Write speed approaches 13MB/sec on average. HD Tach was used for these tests. On tranferring actual files, the Rally2 did take slightly longer than the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium U3 although better than the SanDisk Micro U3. 350 MB of files took a little over a minute. Strangly enough, access times hovered around 51ms which can be a problem versus the 1.0ms of the Cruzer Titanium.
Storage
The drive showed up on my WinXP system showing 3.87GB.

Final Words
OCZ certainly makes quality products and the Rally2 is no exception. However, if you want more even performance in your flash drive, the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium U3 provides better durability and more even read/write performance than the Rally with much better access times. If read speed is your most important factor, the Rally wins hands down.
