Pros: No BHA/BHT or ethoxyquin, per Ophelia..darn tasty!
Cons: use of soy flour, wheat gluten, and artificial flavors, expensive
The Bottom Line: Appealing to cats, meat source as first 3 ingredients, no use of BHA/BHT or Ethoxyquin. If only it didn't contain soy flour, wheat gluten and artificial flavors!

| patriciak's Full Review: Fancy Feast Roasted Beef Feast Gourmet Cat Food |
Those familiar with my quest for a canned cat food that Patrick,my cat with Chronic Renal Failure (CRF), would eat know that we've gone through many flavors and many brands. Now, enter Miss Ophelia (stage right)...the most dramatic American Curl you could ever hope to meet. She makes entering a room a drama, always has a languid comment delivered in a cat drawl, and she is causing extra drama in our lives at this time. We are waiting for a firm diagnosis on a health problem she is having, and in the meantime, keeping her weight good and her spirits up, is essential to us.
Ophelia's Taste Test and Report
"mrphrowwww! Hurry up with that pop-top! Ehm...nice meaty aroma....(excuse me, what ARE you looking at?)...yes...very nice broth surrounding the food...nice soft ground texture (did you schedule that dental appointment for me yet?). This will do...now go away, I'm eating."
Okay, so really now, what is in this stuff?
The predominant ingredients, listed in order of its per centage in this food are: meat broth, beef liver, turkey, wheat gluten, chicken, soy flour, soy protein concentrate, natural and artificial flavors, plus a lengthy list of vitamins and minerals, including taurine.
For comparison sake, the Ash content is maximum 2.7%, the Crude Protein is a minimum of 11%, Crude Fat is a minimum of 2%, Crude Fiber content is a maximum of 1.5% (from the Guaranteed Analysis).
Rating
Depends on who you ask. Per Ophelia (the Sarah Bernhardt of cats) this is a 4 paws up and don't get in her way when she's heard the pop-top pop.
Per me, who does the shopping, and pays for this stuff, not to mention researching new flavors and brands for her perusal, this is a 2 1/2 stars product. I take off for the use of wheat gluten, soy flour and artificial flavorings, and for this Roasted Beef Feast have only beef liver out of 4 meat sources listed as actual beef. Why can't flavors and products just be what they say they are on the label?
Final Thoughts
Cats for many of us, become a part of our family. It is very hard to see them become ill, or as they age, more frail, and both preventative measures such as yearly check-ups, dental care and a good diet, as well as creativity in caring for them when they are not well and more finicky than usual are important. I will feed Ophelia anything non-poisonous that will get her to eat, and that she enjoys. She enjoys Fancy Feast Roasted Beef Feats Gourmet Cat Food with gusto, making both of us very happy. I am pleased that this food does not contain preservatives such as BHA/BHT and ethoxyquin, and that it's first 3 ingredients are meat proteins of some sort, even if not all 3 are beef! Fancy Feast foods are sold only in 1 size - 3 oz. cans - and are available from most grocery stores, pet stores and pet superstores.
