Pros:Decent action scenes
Cons:Cheesy dialogue that borders on being anti-American
The Bottom Line: Teenage boys will probably get a big kick out of this silly action comedy from Uwe Boll.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Far Cry is the latest movie adaptation of a video game from notorious director Uwe Boll. Although it does actually have some decent action scenes, pretty much any other scene that involves dialogue or humor ends up being truly awful. This is a B-grade action movie that is typical of Uwe Boll's line of work, and I actually liked it on a ‘so bad it is good' level.

German actor Til Schweiger, who you'll recognize from movies like King Arthur and Inglourious Basterds, plays a former soldier who now runs a tourist boat off the coast of the Pacific near Seattle. When a pretty young reporter (Canadian actress Emmanuelle Vaugier of CSI: NY) hires him to take her out to an island where a supposed secret military research facility is located, they both wind up in a lot of trouble. The girl gets captured and the guy winds up having to fight his way through countless mercenaries in order to rescue her.

Genetic experiments are being formed at this facility to create ‘ultimate soldier' types with bulletproof skin and muscles, superhuman strength, and so on. The problem is that these soldiers can't be controlled and the program isn't quite complete. When the reporter gets inside the base and causes a ruckus, some of the super-soldiers get loose and things go to complete chaos. This just means a bunch of stuff gets blown up and bad guys get shot while they try to escape. It has been many years since I played the original Far Cry PC game, but what I could remember of the plot and setting seemed to be referenced here pretty well.

The action in this movie is pretty well done. There's a bunch of shooting and a great vehicle chase that played out well, but the best part was a foot chase through the facility that involved all kinds of acrobatics and stunts. I was impressed with the fluidity of the action and all the trucks, boats, and helicopters that were used.

Where the movie failed miserably was in dialogue. There are a couple of characters who were meant to be for comic relief, and they were so dang annoying that I wanted to fast-forward through all of their speaking parts. This movie had way too much goofy humor that didn't blend well with the action, and it made this movie seem like an R-rated version of a Power Rangers episode.

Despite them almost always being bad, I actually enjoy Uwe Boll's movies. I've said before that he's like a modern day Ed Wood, and there is a kind of goofy charm to the levels of cheese that appears in his films. Boll is rather brilliant at putting money together to finance his movies, and he often brings in respectable actors to fill roles in them. The majority of his movies are based on video games from years past, like this one. Although I find him to be a competent action director, I wonder if part of the problem with the dialogue in his movies is that he's German and maybe his grasp on the English language isn't where it needs to be. The American characters in this movie are all portrayed as loudmouth buffoons, but maybe that was intentional.

The fact that this is a Uwe Boll movie should be enough for most people to decide whether or not they want to see Far Cry. Personally, I found it entertaining because I knew what to expect and got a laugh out of it.
