I've always liked the idea of getting a good set of knives.
When my husband and I finally moved into our own place, we decided on a Farberware set because many other Farberware products have proved to be very good. My mother-in-law has always stressed how Farberware is a reliable, good company. For example, my manual Farberware tin opener is the sharpest, most easiest tin opener we've ever used.
Are they sharp?
The knives, as everyone else will testify, are sharp, certainly. We don't have any children so I'm not worried about that aspect.
However, the knives all have bumpy edges though and I would really have liked one or two smooth edged knives to accompany the set. Especially a smooth edges paring knife which I'm used to and ultimately, prefer.
The Design
The handles seem to be designed to be easily held with a dip for the index finger to grip.
The design of the holder is perfectly functional and modern.
Around the edges are 8 steak knives and down the middle of the piece run the fish knife, paring knife, utility, chopping knife, cleaver and shears.
The separation of chopping knives from steak knives is clean in the holder. I only sometimes confuse the utility knife with the steak knives when putting them away because of their relative sizes and dimensions.
The knives don't bend. They are firm for cutting.
We bought an upgraded model with 6 extra kitchen pieces (see below under 'extras').
The Rust Issue
We have had the set maybe a month and I found some rust on one of the knives near the base. I've never seen rust form so quickly on knives in the past, so I'm a little concerned at the overall quality long term.
I'm not ready to recommend any knife set where I'm detecting rust this fast after our purchase.
Extras
Our Faberware Millenium set was an upgrade which came with 6 extra kitchen utensils that stick in the back of the silver-gray circular holder - various shaped plastic spoons and a spatula, all in dark gray.
If you see this version sold, I will say that on one of the spoons, some of the dark gray is starting to look a little worn already.
Aside from this, the upgraded model is convenient in keeping all these extras together in one spot... rather than cluttering up other space in the kitchen.
Overall
I've never had a knife holder before so I'm really enjoying its bench top convenience, but I've never seen knives rust so fast either - and it doesn't come off with scrubbing.
