I don't drink coffee much and when I do it's de-caf with milk and a touch of sugar. I like to have regular coffee around though and a nice pot to make it in when company comes. To me there is nothing more homey than the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Coffee perks a person up so it kind of makes sense to use a coffee maker that makes the best coffee.
My mother used to perk a really good cup of coffee and perculators were "the thing" back then...I guess because it was the only pot available in stores to make coffee in. My opinion is that the only way to get that good cup of coffee is to use a perculator. Besides, the perking sound adds to that "comfy" feeling of home.
When I first got married I received a lovely stainless steel perculator for a wedding gift...the kind that you place on top of the burner of your stove (that was the only kind back then)... The perking sound it made on the glass cover knob reminded me of the Perking Pot Musical Commercial I used to hear on television when I was a child. That was always a comforting sound to me.
Some of you may remember it...it was a plain commercial with a simple tone advertising a tin of Maxwell House Coffee beside a bubbling perking perculator. The perking started with one perk.. then two.. then eventually turned into the tune of a Maxwell House Coffee theme. I still wonder today how that was done?
I loved that commercial so much and used to hop and sing "pop-pop-pop" to the perking sounds it made. Well... I was only little but today if I heard it again I'd still hop and pop to it. After all, we all still have that child "perking" within us somewhere. =)
Well anyway, back to my perculator. It seemed all of the grinds kept getting into the coffee and it was very annoying to my husband. I began to think I could not make a good cup of coffee.
He told me the coffee was delicious but the grinds were tickling his throat. =) Not so funny to serious coffee-drinkers. That was his nice way of saying "no more using that coffee perk" (He called it a perk) or..."My dear wife, you make terrible coffee." =(
I refused to get another coffee pot though for a while because I was certain I could find a way to stop those grinds from getting in. Eventually my husband got his morning coffee at Dunkin Donuts and my perculator ended up packed away.
Through the years we went through many automatic coffee makers including Mister Coffee but I missed that perking sound and making the perfect cup of good coffee (except of course for the loose grinds.)
Last year I received a beautiful gift from my cousin. My husband had passed away some years back so wasn't able to enjoy my surprise when I opened that package. (I miss you so very much hon)
It was a beautiful classic-style chrome and black-designed Farberware 12-Cup Perculator, model number FGP412. The perculator comes with a separate power base that has a cord...the perculator itself does not have the cord. The power base can be programmed ahead of time to perk a pot of delicious coffee whenever you like.
When finished perking it automatically switches to the "warm mode" and then shuts off after two hours. It is made of beautiful chrome and looks like my old-fashioned perking pot I had many years ago. Unlike my old perculator though, the handle and the cover knob stay cool to the touch. Also this perculator graces the counter with its beautiful old-fashioned design and takes up less room than Mister Coffee and all those other automatic coffee makers.
This perculator is fantastic...it keeps coffee at proper serving temperatures and coffee grinds do not get into the coffee. As a habit I use a small piece of Bounty paper towels (which are like cloth) in the basket because sometimes the last few cups may get a grind or two into the coffee.
The Farberware Cordless 12-Cup Perculator is very easy to clean as long as it is cleaned after each use or residue will build up after so many uses and then eventually a pot of what would have been good coffee will turn out bad. Now if that happens you'll blame the pot, won't you? Most people would.
Empty out the coffee grinds, rinse thoroughly, place basket back into pot and boil water adding white vinegar. It can also be boiled right in the pot. Let it sit for an hour or so to take away the residue, rinse thoroughly again in hot water then cold or better yet, let it go through a cycle again and then rinse with cold water... but this is not necessary as long as you get out the smell of vinegar.
I love the programmable digital timer because if I have to go out. I can set it and when my company or family comes the fresh aroma of coffee permeates the house.
Also for me, it's the nostalgia that clicked in my brain as a child...the perking expressed a unique sound that has stuck with me all of these years. Farberware Cordless 12-Cup Perculator is the best of the past with the best of today's modern conveniences.
This review is dedicated to my husband who was an avid coffee drinker and loved and appreciated the perfect cup of black coffee. No milk, no cream, no sugar..."It takes away that freshly perked taste" he would always say.
