johnr55's Full Review: Farberware FCP512S 12-Cup Coffee Maker
I hadn't owned a percolator since the first Mr. Coffee came out many, many years ago. In the past 20+ years I've owned Mr. Coffee, Braun, Krups, Melitta, Bunn, and an Oster thermal unit. When my latest Bunn died, I decided to try a percolator. Some of these drip units didn't keep coffee hot enough, and others (particularly the Mr. Coffee) burned the coffee if it lasted more than 15 minutes. Percolators have been considered 'low brow' for so many years and have gotten such a bad reputation, and I truly didn't remember what perked coffee tasted like. Of course, I've had that terrible coffee you find at conventions and seminars coming out of huge percolators, tasting more like hot burned grounds than anything else.
The Farberware was a revelation! From the first cup, I found the coffee delicious and very full-bodied. I use the little flat round filters that are easily obtained in any grocery and I clean the pot by rinsing, soaping and wiping every time. The pot keeps the coffee at a temperature hot enough, yet without burning. I may make a pot at home and drink it over 3-4 hours, but I find the coffee is still quite drinkable after 4 hours--something I could never do with the Bunn. I have the Millenium model so it has the little glass thing on the top where you can watch the coffee perk--friends have been fascinated just with this! Since I haven't had the pot for years, I can't comment on long-term durability. I enjoyed the coffee from this pot so much I took it to use at my office, and bought one of the digital cordless models for my home.
To anyone like me who hasn't had home-perked coffee in many years, I would recommend trying one of these Farberware pots. You may end up wondering, as I have, why these pots fell out of favor in the first place!
