Jugurtha's Full Review: Hunter S. Thompson - Fear and Loathing: On the Cam...
Hunter S. Thompson, the man who brought you Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, also produced this little beauty. It is, simply, an account of George McGovern's ill-fated attempt to wrest the presidency from Richard Nixon in 1972. However, unlike the vast majority of political campaign followers, Thompson writes with humour and a breakneck prose style that makes the book a pleasure to read. You must be warned, however, that this is not an impartial account, as Thompson is quite unashamedly pro-McGovern throughout the book. If you are sufficiently right-wing that a pro-McGovern account would put you off, then you should perhaps not be reading Thompson anyway- in particular, not the drug-crazed Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. However, I feel that nobody who would want to read the book would be put off by this anyway. After all, probably the only market for a book about a presidential election almost 30 years ago would be for fans of Thompson already, who are unlikely to be put off by his stance and will find within this volume some of his best and most satisfying writing, and political scientists who will enjoy the extended political analysis and the light shed on the events by one so close to them. In conclusion, if either of these is you, read this book.
