Pros: Gentle and effective
Cons: Expensive on a per table basis, consistency of it as a food
I've been dieting for the last several months. The diet has been successful as I've lost more than 15 pounds through calorie restriction, but an unwanted side effect of eating less is that my digestive system is much more sluggish, making me prone to constipation even with additional intake of fluids. I had tried stimulants that worked, but were painful, and gross mix-in water-based fiber supplements that made me gag, so I was looking for something healthy I could take as a tablet or a pill instead. When I found a special for a a bottle of 160 chewable tablets of Fiber Choice Sugar Free chewable fiber supplements for $12.99 ($.0812/tablet) at drugstore.com, I couldn't resist trying it out. This is one of the few products I've found that is cheaper at drugstore.com than at savon.com, even at the normal retail price of $14.99.
At first, I didn't really care for Fiber Choice. An advertised advantage of Fiber Choice is that it can be taken with or without water, but I don't enjoy it on its own. Chewing an entire, quarter-sized tablet was not pleasant. The adult dose is two tablets per day. The children's dose for 6 to 12 year olds is one tablet per day. It has the flavor of chewable vitamin C, which isn't bad, but it has the consistency of slightly chewy cardboard that crumbles and sticks to your teeth. The good news is that it is gentle and effective overnight relief when taken with water. I have found that using the score down the middle of quarter-sized tablet and eating half of a tablet at a time followed by a generous amount of water (at least 8 ounces) is much more amenable and has the desired effect of helping to keep me regular without gas or bloating.
FiberChoice is a minimal source of calories. One serving of two tablets provides 16 calories made up of 4g of Carbohydrates, all of which is Dietary Fiber. The ingredients are: Fructan, sorbitol, cornstarch, cellulose, dextrose, citric acid, magnesium stereate, natural flavors and colors. Keep out of the reach of children - as with any fiber bulking agent, this can be dangerous if taken inappropriately.
