I am always looking for foods that have fiber in them because I don't get nearly enough on a daily basis. I try to eat as healthy as possible but I like sweets as much as the next person. When a friend told me about Fiber One Toaster Pastries, I knew I wanted to try them. I bought the strawberry flavor and wow. They are delicious and give me 5 grams of fiber per pastry.
About The Product
Fiber One Toaster Pastries contain the fiber you love to TASTE! Sure you want fiber, but you want it to taste great! Each Fiber One Toaster Pastry contains 20% of the Daily Value of fiber and at least 16 grams of whole grain.
From the packaging
Packaging
These pastries come packaged in twos inside a foil envelope. There are six pastries in all, meaning three foil envelopes. The pastries look like Kellogg's Pop-Tarts. They have the icing, the same edging, and nearly the same coloring. You can eat them cold or warm them in a toaster. I have done both.
Taste
The taste of Fiber One Toaster Pastries in strawberry is great. There is no way to tell that you are eating whole grains rather than enriched white flour. The filling is sweet and tastes like good strawberry jam and the icing is just like the icing on on Pop Tarts. The only issue is that one pastry may not be enough and, with a foil envelope already opened, the urge to have that second one will be strong. I only eat 1200-1500 calories a day so eating two of these for breakfast wouldn't be the smartest thing to do but I have been tempted. They taste delicious out of the package and warmed in the toaster. For me, they bring back loads of childhood memories when Pop Tarts were a rare but delicious treat in our home.
But are the GOOD for You?
I wouldn't go so far as to call these pastries health foods by any means. They pack 190 calories per pastry and have 4 grams of fat in each. There is none of the nasty trans fat though and that is the fat you want to stay away from.
Each Strawberry Fiber One Toaster Pastry gives you 5 grams of fiber, a good amount to start the day, You get 4 grams of protein which is pretty good for a pastry. Rarely do I see much, if any protein in sweets.
Other than some iron, there is not much in the way of vitamins and minerals in these pastries. By comparison, Kellogg's Pop Tarts have less than a gram of fiber and a bit more fat and calories as well as less protein.
They are made with whole grain wheat flour but are packed with corn syrup which many people shun. I don't really worry much about the whole corn syrup debate. I feel it is better for me than artificial sweeteners and recent studies are proving that high fructose corn syrup really isn't the villain some make it out to be.
In all, these pastries are not powerhouses of nutrition but they give you a good start on the day's fiber and taste absolutely delicious.
My Experience
I eat Fiber One bars which have around the same amount of fiber and taste great. I also eat Fiber One cereal now and then. When I saw the Toaster Pastries at the store, I remembered my friend raving about them so I picked up a box.
They taste amazing. I really like the fresh strawberry jam taste and the hearty wheat pastry. These are great a cup of hot tea in the morning or as a snack at night with a glass of milk. (Although I don't drink milk, my son eats these with a big glass of cold milk.)
The one thing to watch for is overindulging and eating two at once. For those not watching their weight or with fast metabolisms, 380 calories isn't a big dent in their overall daily intake but it is a pretty empty dent. If you stick to one Fiber One Toaster Pastry Strawberry (or any other flavor), you'll get the fiber your body needs and the taste your mouth craves.
Conclusion
I really enjoy Fiber One Toaster Pastry in Strawberry and plan to try the other flavors as well. I can start my day with 5 grams of fiber and a bit of protein. If I add a couple of strips of turkey bacon or ham, I have a high protein breakfast that tastes great. I would love it if these pastries were slightly lower in calories but they are what they are. I give them 4 stars. I would like to see them enriched with more vitamins and minerals to round out their nutrition but they taste amazing!
