Written: May 23 '08 (Updated Jun 01 '09)
Product Rating:
Pros: Delightful, refreshing and geared to the average, real, woman!
Cons: Could use a bit less advertisements and a few more articles!
The Bottom Line: This magazine shows you a wide variety of things that fit into our lives as plus-sized women and doesn't cater to the smaller women whatsoever!
I don’t know if I should state “normal” women or not. But, the average woman today is classified as a plus-size. They say that America is getting larger and the average size (for women) is now classified as around a size 12 or 14. This magazine caters to that group of plus-sized, fabulous women that are looking for a magazine that provides truth inside. We all would love to look like some of the super models out there. But, reality is that we are more gorgeous than the super models are because we are real and they are only air-brushed perfection. We are beautiful with all of our faults, flaws and girly type figures! Rejoice women, this magazine is for you!
The Magazine
I ran across this one day while shopping in Catherines a plus-sized women’s’ clothing store in my area. They were actually selling the magazines in the store (in addition to telling you about a great coupon that the magazine had inside for 20 or 30% off of the purchase that day). So, you buy a $4 magazine and save some substantial money on your clothing purchase. I could handle that deal. Little did I know that I would soon be subscribing to that magazine!
I found the magazine very refreshing. The last to “cover girls” were Camryn Manheim and Mo’Nique. If you don’t know either of these women, take a few seconds to search for them online and check them out. Neither of these women are bean pole, skinny minnies. These are real, beautiful, strong and tremendous women gracing the covers! They, alone, can give someone a lot of courage by just reading their stories!
The magazine seems to run about 100 pages give or take each month and they usually have some terrific coupons inside for places like the following: Catherines, Fashion Bug, Shoetrader.com and a couple of others.
The magazine is a typical beauty type magazine for the plus-size gal. They have make-up tips, body and hair care products or suggestions, and styling advice amongst other things. They also usually have an exercise section with quick do it yourself tips for toning up or getting in shape or just getting active. And, the models they choose to demonstrate the moves are not a size 4 figure. I would venture a guess that the model is about a 14 or so. Therefore, it makes it real!
They also have a section regarding clothing and show you great items to piece together for fantastic outfits. These are all modeled on women that are size 14 and up, I would guess. I venture a guess that some of them are even close to a size 18 or 20! They have the active wear items, dressy, night on the town items to the business office items. And, they even have some lingerie items as well! They cover you from top to bottom and the magazines vary from issue to issue with the items or groupings they will cover!
They have helpful articles ranging from sexual health to letters to the editor (like all magazines) to the self-help type sections where someone writes in with a concern be it work, relationship or other and it gets answered in the magazine to help others facing the same dilemmas.
The magazine also has some really good and healthier recipes that they share and other tips for nutritious eating! They cover quite a gamut, don’t they? If you did not know about that, now you have a little more insight.
I mentioned previously the last two cover girls that the magazine has had. In each edition, the magazine talks to their cover girl for their take on life, their philosophy and their lust for life, even though they are a plus-sized woman in a skinny world (like theater, movies, tv, etc.). The magazine keeps it real!
The magazine is published 6 times a year (bi-monthly). Therefore, you will have 1 issue for January and February and then get your next 1 for March and April. The magazine overall contains a lot of information, pictures and touches on articles and stories. There is not a huge number of articles in these magazines, but the article they do have are touching, uplifting and enjoyable to read. There are a lot of advertisements and pictures of items that cater to the plus-sized woman, which is nice. It introduces you to a lot of businesses that you might know about and might open your world to a lot of new vendors for items that you have been looking for in your life!
Also, for those of you that enjoy contests, they always have a section where you can possibly win items that are in that current edition. So, if you really like some of the items, look for the “WIN ME” label, go online and sign up for the one item you would like to win!
Overall Impressions
The magazine is reasonably priced at $3.95 at newsstands. Or, you can subscribe for a full year’s worth for about $16.00 and it is shipped directly to you so you don’t have to worry about what month it is published! (You can go to their website if you want to look at it and get a feel for their magazine! It’s www.FigureMagazine.com ) .
I enjoy the simple nature of the magazine and the down-to-earth feeling. It’s easy to read, flip through checking out the pictures and I look forward to getting it in my mailbox every other month! Usually when I receive it, I grab onto it and sit down and read it that night. Which, if you would see my magazine collection on the end table in my house with editions going back a number of months, it’s amazing how quickly I tear through this magazine. I enjoy it so much that I don’t leave it hanging around unread for long!
Check out their website to get a feel for the magazine. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. This is a terrific magazine that lets us naturally beautiful bigger women feel great in our skins rather than looking as some air-brushed perfection in other magazines making us second-guess our own attributes!
~Thank you for spending time with me today!~
**UPDATE as of April/May 2009 issue, this magazine is no longer going to be published. Budget cuts everywhere are hitting. :( **
