Pros:beating someone up, controls, somewhat realistic

Cons:long load times, controls

The Bottom Line: If you've never played a boxing game before but find the concept interesting, this is the game for you.

I've never been a huge boxing fan, but this game really brought out the fighter in me.

This game in a PS3 bundle I bought, and almost immediately, a friend demanded I pop this game in. The first thing I noticed is that it actually takes up to a full minute to load most things. Even navigating just to some menus calls for it to stop and load.

Once you regain control however, there is a bounty to tinker with before stepping into the ring. The biggest option has to be choosing one of six pre-set controls. The default setup programs the right analog stick to throw jabs, hooks and upper cuts for both hands, depending on the way you push and roll it. Other setups move the jabs and hooks to the standard buttons, which is a bit easier to execute in the heat of a fight. However, upper cuts are always thrown via stick, as are complex punches like upper cut haymakers.

I'm not sure if I like the stick control. It's new and innovative; it definitely takes time getting used to, and can be difficult to execute in the ring. However, throwing an uppercut eventually becomes fairly easy with practice, and I can hold my own with just the stick.

In the ring, you can choose to view yourself through your opponent's eyes, a cool, new feature, or you can look at both from ringside. Either way, you can watch yourself as you sway, throw up blocks and punch.

Each boxer has a health and stamina meter. Unfortunately I do not have the manual to this game and don't know all of the details. What I've learned from playing, however, is that body shots tend to destroy stamina, which limits how many punches you can throw without breaking. If you knock the other fighter's health down, the game presents you a KO moment, when everything goes slow and your opponent tries desperately to avoid taking one last hit. If you can get him, he'll fall to the mat, either getting up during the count and regaining a bit of health or stay down if you've knocked him around a bit. I have had the ref call a fight when I was winning by health, but my stamina was fairly low, so I guess it is also possible to win with lots of body shots.

It is also possible to get disqualified if you hold too often, the ref will warn you, or if he catches you throwing an illegal punch.

The best way to succeed in the game, and even the free trainer will tell you, is to land a series of combos. Typically this includes jabs, then hooks. You can win with haymakers, uppercuts and singular big punches but the game really rewards boxers who take realistic approaches.

There are several modes of playing, from single player creating a new boxer to playing online. I haven't done much other than create a boxer, but in that mode you can choose your fights, choose one of three training games before a fight and buy moves/equipment.

Depending on how and whom you play, you can enter the ring as anyone from a modern day featherweight fighter to Muhammed Ali. Certain matches will permit you to mix historic and new, while others will let you combine different weight groups, often for a challenge.
