Pros:Expiration date on box, easy to use, fast results that are easy to read.
Cons:More expensive that some tests, no test is 100% accurate.
The Bottom Line: A good test that might set you back a couple of extra bucks, but isn't it worth it to know for sure?
Lately I have been feeling a little tired. I have also been having massive problems with my stomach. Foods don't taste the same, or the smell made me gag. When I was exhausted, no matter how much sleep I was getting, that is when I began to wonder.

When I had my Gastric Bypass surgery, just shy of 4 months ago, I knew I wasn't supposed to get pregnant for at least a year. I have been on the birth control patch since my surgery. I had also had a lot of problems since my surgery, especially with eating. I couldn't really, possibly, be pregnant. Or could I?
I purchased a box of FIRST RESPONSE Early Result Pregnancy Tests last weekend. I had used the brand before, in our battle against infertility, always getting a negative result. I knew it was a decent brand, and with the few that the store had to offer, especially for two tests ("Bonus test inside"), it was a good deal. If it was negative, which I was sure it would be, I'd have an extra test for down the road, just in case.
The bright pink FIRST RESPONSE Early Result Pregnancy Test box that I purchased contained two pregnancy tests, as well as a sheet of directions, in Spanish and English, complete with pictures. The test sticks are roughly 5 3/4" long and 3/4" wide. Both tests are white, with a clear, plastic lid over the absorbent tip.
The FIRST RESPONSE Early Result Pregnancy Tests are simple to use. Uncap the absorbent tip and hold in your urine stream for 5 seconds. Have bad aim? The absorbent tips are 1 1/4" long and 1/2" wide, which I think makes them easier to use. If you are more comfortable, you can, me not being politically correct, pee in a cup and dip the test in it for 5 seconds. Place the cap back over the absorbent tip (which you don't have to do, if you don't mind pee on your counter), and lay if on a flat surface, result window side up. If you see two pink lines, after waiting the 3 minutes required, you have a positive. Follow up with your doctor. Only one pink line? You're negative. Try again later. You could have a false negative, so wait a few days and try again if "Aunt Flo" doesn't make a stop at your place. The tests boasts "5 days sooner than the day of your missed period"*, but it would still be wrong, even though "Flo" was a few days late for me. It wouldn't be the first time she was late.
So, how did my test come out? I did as directed and "did my thang" with the little stick and the urine. I didn't have to wait. Almost immediately the first line, the non-control line, turned a faint pink. Within another minute, it was almost the same shade as the control line. I began to panic! It CAN'T be positive! My surgeon will kill me! I was using my birth control, like I was told to! Then I remembered. I had strep throat and an ear infection earlier this month, and was on antibiotics for a little over 2 weeks. Maybe the test, which is 99%** accurate, was right? Maybe the antibiotics had messed with my birth control?
After trying to call my doctor (who wasn't in) and my surgeon (who I found out 4 hours later was on leave) I really began to panic. I couldn't get ahold of anyone! My husband had asked if I took the second test. Maybe it was a false positive? I drank as much milk, as fast as I could without throwing it back up, so I could re-test.
About 2 hours later I used the second test. I only "sort of" had to go, and my nerves were shot. I HAD TO KNOW! After less than 3 seconds (that was the best I could do), I re-capped my test and waited. Within seconds I had two pink lines. I was floored. What was the chance of TWO false positives? Slim?
Wondering if I got a bad batch, I finally got a hold of a nurse (who I had been dealing with for almost a year with my diabetes and we get along well) that was able to put in for a blood test for me. About two hours later she called with the results. "The rabbit died", was what she said, laughing. Obviously, the tests were fine. I am, officially, 4 1/2 weeks pregnant. I'm petrified that something will happen, but everyone has been very optimistic, especially with the symptoms I have been having. Nausea is good sign!
Anyway, the FIRST RESPONSE Early Result Pregnancy Test was a good choice for me. As far as price goes, it was about the middle of the road. Higher than some, but not as expensive as some of the better name brands.
From the box:
* - First Response can detect the pregnancy hormone 5 days sooner than the day of your missed period.
** - 99% accurate at detecting typical pregnancy hormone levels. Note that hormone levels vary.
"In clinical testing, First Response detected the hormone levels in 69% of women tested 4 days before their expected period, in 83% of women 3 days before their expected period, in 93% of women 2 days before their expected period and in 93% of women 1 day before their expected period."
Drugs that might effect the test results are medications that contain the pregnancy hormone such as APL, Pregnyl, Profasi and Perganol.
