| Chinook's Full Review: Fisher Price Adjustable High Chair |
I was given the Fisher Price Adjustable High Chair as a gift from a group of friends when I had my second little doodlebug in June of 1997. Our first high chair was of similar design, but produced by Graco. It had deteriorated over the course of about 18 months through the use of our first doodlebug. I simply assumed that the life of a high chair was a very short (and expensive!) one. However, I discovered this needn’t be the case. High chairs can be durable, versatile, easy to clean and easy to use. I have been a witness to these truths over the past 3 years, as we have had in our possession this wonderful product by Fisher Price.
The Fisher Price Adjustable High Chair is simply a great product. I would first like to comment on its superior construction. This high chair is made of sturdy, molded plastic—no rough edges to scrape, scratch, or even cut mommy or baby. It has a wide base that provides superb stability (so you know that your babe is safe if he/she manages to stand, or is ambushed by older siblings!) and proves to be a real challenge to tip or even rock. There are only two moving features, which are the removable tray and the seat itself. This means that there are just fewer things to break and/or wear out, and after our experience with the Graco high chair, I think this is a great concept.
I’d like to tell you about some of my favorite features about this high chair. First, the folks at Fisher Price have really tried to make this product one that is easy for us busy mums to clean and keep clean. If you are an experienced mum, you know what I am talking about—food and sticky stuff get everywhere in a high chair. If you are a brand new mum or soon-to-be mum, my advice would be to keep your old, worn toothbrushes-they will be invaluable to help you keep all of your baby equipment clean!
The first ‘easy clean’ feature is the vinyl coated fabric that they have used to make the seat pad and to cover the back rest. This makes everything easy to just wipe down after meals and spills, and yet it is also durable for when messes are bigger and need a bit of scrubbing. The seat pad itself is completely removable, but since the folks at Fisher Price have attached velcro straps to the pad, the seat will not shift or slide when you put your wriggling armful in for dinner.
As the rest of the entire chair is made out of a durable plastic, it will withstand the everyday wipe down, and also the scrubbing with a scouring pad and cleanser if you need it (say, when daughter #1 writes her name in orange crayon all over the legs?).
The next feature that I find so invaluable to me on a daily basis is the tray. This tray is remarkably easy to remove or slide into place with one hand. Yes, I mean really with one hand! The central release button makes it easy to put it on or take it off while holding your tot (or the juice or pasta!) in the other. You can also remove the tray by the side release mechanisms (say if you have a big mess on it and want to keep it steady until you can get to the sink!).
The tray itself is smooth and deep. This allows for holding all kinds of big spills, or blocks and crayons needed for amusement. It cleans up great, and the plastic has not stained from any sort of food spills in the three years we’ve had it (our Graco had light red stains from spaghetti sauce all over it. Not attractive!).
The next feature about this product that I find makes it superior to others is the fact that it will adjust to meet the needs of your child. It has six height levels that you can adjust the seat to, so as your child grows, the seat can accommodate this. As your child matures and gains more independence, you can remove the tray and use the seat as a booster, as it will slide right under the edge of any table.
Lastly, the most important thing about this high chair is the fact that it is easy to adjust! That’s right! You don’t have to be a nuclear physicist to be able to adjust this seat. Not only is it easy, but you can do it with one hand. It simply adjusts up or down with a sort of ‘rocking motion’. You slip it forward and rock it to the level that suits your needs, et voila! It’s adjusted. When you realize that this high chair could last you three or more years, you know that you are making a sound investment.
So, here we are in the new millenium. Three years have passed since we were given the Fisher Price Adjustable High Chair when our lovely #2 came into our lives. We now have #3—bouncing baby boy, who has been enjoying the world as he views it from his seat of authority. This high chair has been used non-stop for over three years, and still shows little sign of wear or tear. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to purchase a high chair. Your money will be well spent on a safe, durable and easy to use product that will adjust to the needs of your child as they change. Or better yet—maybe you’ll have some fantastic friends like mine who will get it for you!
