| tritter72's Full Review: Fisher Price Baby's First Tigger |
Being Winnie the Pooh fanatics, my husband and I had a very easy time choosing a theme for our child's nursery. Though we didn't know if our new arrival was going to be a boy or a girl, we did know that our bundle of joy would spend many a nap dozing in a bedroom inspired by the Hundred Acre Woods gang. As we put together the room, we came upon a several stuffed toys made by Fisher-Price, and we were thrilled to see that not only did they depict our favorite characters, but they were also designed with infants in mind. As I said, we're fanatics, so buying one animal wasn't an option. We came home with Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, and Eeyore.
Lots of Things for a Parent to Like
As first-time parents, my husband and I had no idea that we were about to be bombarded by stuffed animals. Cute little bunnies adorned shower gifts, large baby-powder scented bears came from coworkers, and even a talking animal or two made it into the mix. Had we foolishly purchased Baby's First Tigger and his friends, only to have them be overshadowed by these newcomers? One look at the tags on the rival animals told us that we had not been foolish. In fact, practically every stuffed toy we received warned that it was for ages 3 and up. According to its box, Baby's First Tigger is appropriate for ages 0-24 months. Terrific! An animal that could be played with from day one, thanks to some well thought-out features.
Size--Standing at about 11 1/2 inches tall, Baby's First Tigger isn't an overwhelming animal. Infants can easily hold him, and his arms, ears, and long tail are easy places for inquisitive little fingers to grasp.
Stuffing--Unlike many of the "big kid" stuffed animals my son received, this one is filled with polyurethane foam. No pellets or beads will spill out of a ripped seam, which means no choking hazards for the little ones who put everything in their mouths.
Baby-Safe Decorations--In addition to the filling, one of the main reasons why a stuffed animal may be recommended for older children is the way in which the toy is decorated. Plastic eyes can be chewed off, noses can be torn from the face. No such worries here! Tigger's eyes and eyebrows are stitched on to his face, and his stripes are of the silk-screened variety. Even his mouth and nose are made of cloth, making this toy 100% teething baby friendly.
No Fur--I happen to be mom to the recently abdicated Spit-Up King. When he held the throne, I had to be sure to keep an eagle's eye on him to prevent permanent stains on carpet, clothing, and furniture. Stuffed animals? Well, let's just say that their fur was an easy target. Though animals that have that soft, fur-like material are beautiful, they are at serious risk for being matted and crusty in no time. Fisher-Price designed Tigger, on the other hand, to be soft yet able to withstand the abuse of a Spit-Up King (or Queen, as the case may be). Polyester covers him on the outside, but they have managed to give it a feel somewhat reminiscent of velour. He's just plain huggable!
Machine Washable--Should a hazard strike, it is OK to toss Baby's First Tigger into the washer. The tag suggests tying him inside a pillowcase first and using cold water. He can also be placed in the dryer. I have to tell you, though, that spot cleaning may be all you need. In our case, we have been quite successful at giving him a "sponge bath" rather than immersing him completely. (I don't know why, but I just have this skepticism about putting stuffed animals in the washer...)
It's Tigger!--As the photo above shows, this stuffed animal is a representation of the Disney-designed Tigger (in contrast to the Classic Tigger as designed by E.H. Shepherd). With his black-striped orange fur and yellow face and tummy, this Tigger stuffed toy is an excellent likeness of the familiar and well-loved character.
And How About the Pooh Fan In Training?
I have to admit that my son is not all that interested in stuffed animals. All those gifts we received? They make terrific room decorations, but they are rarely hugged or cuddled. There are two exceptions to this: Baby's First Piglet is my son's naptime companion everyday, and Baby's First Tigger has made it into the playtime rotation.
Why Tigger? Well, it's an interesting coincidence. My son has been an apprentice demolitions expert for some time now. (OK, that's a nice way of saying that he'll gladly tear down any tower that stands in his way!) His newfound walking skills have made him even faster at knocking down those towers, so we've had to add a few more toys to the mix. My living room is practically an obstacle course! Baby's First Tigger was an excellent candidate for the day's activities because he can actually stand on his own, unlike his friends Pooh and Piglet who must lean against the wall. Because he has a tail, Tigger has an excellent tripod on which he can stand...and be knocked down!
Now that my son has seen Tigger in use, he is much more likely to go over and pick him up, even if we're not playing towers. We've recently started letting Tigger's personality shine through, "boinging" him all over the house to the tune of my son's delighted giggles. My son has lots of energy, and so does Tigger! Of the four toys that we bought that day so long ago, Baby's First Tigger is the one most suited to the imaginative play that we've just recently started. While he may not understand the depressed mood of Eeyore, my son is quite able to identify with the "bounciness" of Tigger.
Despite the endless workout provided by my busy 14-month-old, Baby's First Tigger has held up well and looks as good as new. Though I was concerned about his tail at first, it has held its shape well, and the stuffed toy is still soft and cuddly.
Recommended for a Baby Near You!
Though there are many, many stuffed animals out there, I highly recommend Baby's First Tigger for infants. This well-designed stuffed toy is safe and appropriate from birth, and it is adaptable to the interests of older babies as well. Whether it is used simply as a room decoration or put through its paces as a plaything, this Fisher-Price designed toy is a winner.
