Cons: Does NOT fit all Cribs
My daughter's addiction to white noise prompted me to buy this Fisher Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium. The first item I purchased quit working properly within a few weeks, and after a phone call with Fisher Price Customer Service (see their website for info and contact numbers) I received a replacement at no cost to me. The second Aquarium has been working fine for the last few months.
I was delighted to find all the different features and combinations of features that this item offers. From the packaging and descriptions it was difficult to tell how it functioned. You can choose Music/Noise alone, with/without motion, and then with light on or off. You cannot have just the light. You cannot have only light and music, you must have light, music and motion. BUT-from reading the package it was not clear to me that you could have Ocean Sounds and Motion, so it was a pleasant surprise to me that this was so. When the packaging and manufacturer information refers to 'Music' this is also including the white noise/ocean or nature sounds as a 'music'. Yea-because I wanted to have Ocean Sounds and Motion. Adding the light comes in handy at nighttime.
The unit has about 6 different actual 'songs', and an additional 5 or 6 different nature sounds settings. Including one that is emulating a heartbeat, bubble sounds, wave sounds and outdoor noises. At first this was exactly what I bought it for, but now my little one is 6 months old and she loves the music on it. Of the music, some are classical renditions, and others are childrens' songs. Twinkle twinkle is our current favorite.
I was surprised that it only took our little one a small amount of time to reach this and turn it on-the button is easily placed so a baby can do this. It also takes just a gentle push. I think this is a major plus, so when she is a bit older she can play with it during her nap times on her own. I find it peaceful and soothing to watch myself!
The remote works very easily. The box and information made it seem as though it needed to have a 'line of sight' to work, but I am pretty confident that this is not the case. We have it sitting on the changing table and it gets bumped all the time. The unit always turns on. Even if I am standing between it and the Aquarium. We do often use the Remote to restart the unit from the doorway at night, very handy and effective!
For those of us with fancy cribs-Beware! The straps on this Aquarium are the one downside of the item. The package and info does note that this might not fit all cribs, and this is very true for the decorative crib designs that are currently popular. If you have a simple crib, with thin or plain sides and rails, you should be fine. Otherwise, watch out. This Aquarium does NOT fit on the front of my crib, and there are only two spaces on either side of our crib where it is even possible to place it. The Aquarium attaches with two plastic/vinyl type straps, which are not very long, and do not accommodate the decorative moldings that are on many cribs now. Our crib has a thick molding along the front, a curved back, and sides that curve up to meet the back (our crib converts to a full size bed with foot board and headboard). This Aquarium ONLY fits on the sides near the front, and then at a tilt. I have a washcloth rolled up under one of the straps to keep the Aquarium as straight as possible, because otherwise all the bubblers do not function. The unit is fully functionalat a slight tilt, but the three separate bubble units at the bottom will not all 'go' when it is tilted. The motion, lights, and music work fine. The slight addition of the washcloth has it working at 97% performance, and that 3% is only the small amount of angle that it has going. Which (my husband would tell you) no one would notice but me. My biggest complaint at this placement/attachment issue is that this is not the easiest place for a baby to watch a mobile. It is above her head, but I place her off to the side in the crib and she watches it. I would have rather had it on the front (straps not long enough) or the back (given the design, never an option) but she likes it so much I don't care now.
We use this a lot-up to three times a day, and sometimes multiple times during those instances. When we are home all day, our little one takes two naps plus bedtime. It gets used at each nap and usually at bedtime. (I should add, little girl falls asleep for nap within two minutes with this thing!) The music and functions run for 18 minutes each 'play'. And recently we night weaned our beast-meaning that it was 'played' sometimes 2 or 3 times at night. Given all that, the batteries (4-C) lasted more than two months. Which I think is very fair-we do use it a LOT.
All in all, this thing has been great. More soothing than the more traditional mobile that we used with baby #1. Works like a charm to get our little one to sleep and back to sleep, which is what it is all about.
