| myepinionis's Full Review: Fisher Price Learning Sensations: Number Shape and... |
A few months ago, I found and bought this toy to use in my classroom. Today, I found it stored away in my closet, and I decided to take it out and try it! Wow, this is a great toy. There is so much to do, all held right in your hand. Please, read on.
~The Product~
The Fisher Price Number Flash Cards are part of FP's Learning Sensations. Learning Sensations are "multisensory toys that offer a comprehensive learning experience." The product looks at teaching colors, numbers, and shapes. The flash cards are plastic, and the base is also plastic. There is a thick piece of plastic that holds each flashcard, and also connects the flashcards to the base (like a big set of keys). The base itself fits in your hand. It has a slot that holds the cards. There are three buttons on this toy. When one of those are pushed, it automatically activates. Here's what they do:
The Owl: TEACH
When the button with the owl is pushed, a voice instructs the player to insert any card. When the card is inserted, the voice tells them what that card is. For example, if I insert the 5 card that has 5 phones on it, it tells me "You found 5 phones" and then there are five rings. Then it says to insert another card, and will keep doing so until another card is inserted. If one is not inserted, just within seconds the toy automatically turns off (signaled by a few beeps).
The Question Mark: TEST
When the button with the question mark is pushed, a voice says "Please insert the card with..." and randomly chooses different cards to insert. If you insert the correct card, it rewards you, names the card, and plays a sound effect related to the card. If the wrong card is inserted, it merely tells what that card is, and then repeats the requested card. If a card is not inserted, the voice will repeat itself twice, and then if a card is still not inserted, it turns off.
The Music Note: TICKLE
When the button with the music note is pushed, a voice says "Let's rap" and music begins playing in the background. When a card is inserted, the voice says what the card is, and makes up a rap to the item on the card. Like the other buttons, if a card is not inserted within a few seconds, the toy turns off.
This toy uses 3 "AAA" Alkaline batteries. These are included with the toy.
~What's Included~
Included in the Fisher Price Number Flash Cards are
~10 colored flash cards with pictures on each side, doubling the flexibility of play.
~The base
~A thick piece of plastic attaching the cards to the base.
~Warnings~
There is nothing with the Fisher Price Number Flash Cards that could harm or pose a choking hazard. All pieces are secured together, and none are small enough to be consumed. Because the flash cards and base are made of plastic, this toy can take the wear and tear of preschool children.
The only thing that I had trouble with at first, is manipulating the cards around to be able to insert them completely into the base. It is alot like when you are trying to use a particular key on your keychain. It gets easier though, the more it is used.
~Age Range~
This toy is recommended for ages 3 and up.
~Product Availability~
I purchased this toy at Target a few months ago for about $25.00. Now, keep in mind that this toy had just been released when I purchased it. The price since then has dropped. It is currently available on Fisher Price's website for $15.00.
NOTE: There is also an alphabet version of the flashcards available as well in stores and on Fisher Price's website.
~Overall Recommendation~
I was very surprised at how much there is to do on this toy. It can actually hold the attention of a preschooler! My daughter is only 2 and has showed extreme interest in this, so I may have to get a second one for her! While the children are having fun, they are learning number, shape, and color identification, word association, and listening skills all in one toy! This toy is also very beneficial to children who learn kinesthetically. I have to say that this is one of the best toys that has come around in a long time.
