| neosmom's Full Review: Fisher Price Rescue Heroes: Bill Barker and ATV |
I'm so torn on my opinion of this toy. I hate it, but my son loves it. Go figure that out.
I found it for only $7.99 which is a fabulous price for the figures with vehicles. I snatched it up immediately (along with two other sets).
First, let me say that I had no idea who this guy was when I bought him. I had never seen him in a single video (although I have seen him in one episode since then). There isn't much to him, but I figured that since the price was just over half of what I had found him for in every other store, I didn't have much to lose.
He's a standard Rescue Hero figure, except that he doesn't come with any kind of backpack attachment at all. (This is only the second figure I've ever encountered that doesn't.) The only interesting thing I noticed about him is that he has a little dog bone strapped to his ankle. This bone doesn't come off or anything. Just for looks. I've found out since that Bill Barker has a dog named Buster that always comes with him on rescue missions. I'm assuming that's what the bone he has is for. But, since this figure doesn't come with the dog, I don't really get it.
The ATV is a single figure vehicle. There is no room on it for any other figures to ride. On the front there is a little wench that has a three pronged hook on it. When you pull this out it makes a clicking sound. Then you have to wind it back in. There is no handle or anything, so this task can be tedious. It's probably easier for smaller hands, but I always seem to get stuck with the chore at clean-up time. On the back end is what looks like a storage tote built in. It does open, but I don't understand why since there isn't anything in it to take out and there's no space put anything either. On the very back is a hook just like the ones on the figure's backs. It's meant to hold your backpacks while riding on this ATV. But since Bill doesn't come with a backpack, that seems about as purposeful as the bone on his leg for no dog. The ironic thing is that the way this ATV is designed, if you wanted a figure to ride on it while wearing a backpack, there is plenty of room. The storage hook isn't even necessary then.
But, like I said above, my son is head over heels in love with this toy. He calls the figure "Barker" and plays with it constantly. He even sleeps with the figure on occasion. It's definitely a favorite.
Personally, I don't get the enchantment over this toy. It doesn't do much of anything. There's the wench, but there really isn't much else to it. Just a vehicle. And the wheels make this really annoying sound on the floor. It's because they are hollowed out plastic, I think. Of course, if your house is carpeted, this wouldn't be an issue for you.
It just doesn't seem to offer much compared with the other figure/vehicle combos I've purchased. I think I did pretty good finding it at $7.99, but I must say that I would be dreadfully disappointed if I had paid the going rate for this toy. But who am I to argue with a happy little boy?
