| pippadaisy's Full Review: Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Matt Med... |
My son has reached that point in every toddler's life where he realized that his slightly older cousins have cooler toys than he does. And of course, wanting to be like the big kids, he wants to play with their stuff. As a result, I allowed my sister (his cousins' mother) to talk me onto allowing the arrival of Rescue Heroes toys for Valentine's Day and his birthday this year, against my better judgment. Something possessed me to order Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Matt Medic.
~&~ The Basics ~&~
Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Matt Medichas a different look to him that the other Rescue Heroes that my son has. I'm assuming that because he's a doctor and not a firefighter or something, Matt has a short-sleeved red suit on with multiple molded pockets. The suit has a black belt, black and brown trim, and a metallic blue medic symbol on his left sleeve. Matt is wearing molded metallic blue gloves, metallic blue and silver boots, and has a metallic blue headband on.You can see his actual arms (something new for our Rescue Heroes), and he has "mussed" molded brown hair, silver molded goggles (he has no visible eyes as a result), and the GOOFIEST grin on his face. In case you weren't sure that he was a doctor, Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Matt Medic has a bendable, molded silver and metallic blue stethoscope large enough to examine an African elephant, which is permanently affixed to his head. It also includes a small silver antenna, so I'm assuming he can listen to the aforementioned elephant and communicate with the other Rescue Heroes at the same time.
Matt is articulated at the head, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and legs (hips).
Included with Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Matt Medic, you get the huge Mission Select backpack which, for Matt, is red with silver, black, and neon orange accents. The water cannon apparatus is silver with black accents, and there is a large silver antenna on a black base, what appears to be some sort of silver radar equipment, and a clear grey plastic "water cannon" that fits into Matt's hand (although what he's going to do with the water cannon with no protective gear on is anyone's guess). On the back of the backpack is a neon orange triangle, and a neon orange dial. Spin the dial until the "mission" picture you want is in the viewing area (the rest are covered with the a clear smoke grey plastic), press the red button in the center and Matt will talk about the mission selected. There are six missions: a tornado, a fire, an erupting volcano, an earthquake, an avalanche, and a flood. Selecting the flood mission several times, I get Matt to say the following:
"Matt Medic here! Flood alert! Giving first aid! Is my! Top job!"
"Set up mobile hospital! At the flood!"
"Stop the flood! That's your! Top job! Standing by..."
"We must! Get through! The flood!"
"The flood! May! Get Through!"
Matt Medic requires two AAA batteries that install into his backpack via a Phillips-head screwed battery door. Batteries are included, but may be worn down from use on store shelves.
Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Matt Medic comes with a video. According to my sister, who has more Rescue Heroes experience than I do, they are attached in a random fashion, and aren't specific to any particular Rescue Hero. As a result, when we purchased our figures from Amazon, we received three Rescue Heroes, all with the same video: one containing the episodes "Edge of Disaster," which is about two climbers needing to be rescued from an avalanche, and "Flood of Fear" about a flood and a bursting dam.
~&~ Parents Perspective ~&~
With all my Rescue Heroes reviews, I have to get my first bit out of the way; the Rescue Heroes have names that sound like porn stars to me. Let me see YOU try watching a video with your kids when the stars have names like "Wendy Waters" and "Sandy Beach" and not giggling. It's just not possible.
Secondly, while I appreciate the fact that Fisher Price really tried to have these figures say a number of things, the stilted speech that results from combining several short blurbs into a sentence drives me nuts, especially since my son has a speech delay.
My third general gripe about Rescue Heroes is the positively ridiculous amount of marketing. At least four collections are released a year, and it's not like you can just get your Matt Medic a new outfit; you have to get a NEW Matt Medic to go with the new stuff. The Mission Select collection is a perfect example. If you want Matt Medic to talk to the other Mission Select Rescue Heroes, you'd better have the Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Matt Medic or the feature just won't work. The videos are nothing more than animated commercials for the toys, and Fisher Price adds insult to injury by putting their regular commercials on the videos as well!
And finally, specific to Matt himself, he's just butt ugly. With his too-large stethoscope, silly headband and goggles and goofy grin, it annoys me just to look at him while writing up this review.
~&~ Play Value ~&~
In most cases with the Rescue Heroes, my kids' opinions are totally the opposite of mine. My son LOVES both his Billy Blazes figures, but when it comes to Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Matt Medic, I'm afraid it's unanimous: we don't like him. I'm not sure if it's because of his goofy grin or the fact that, as my nephews point out, "He's boring," but nine times out of ten, when my son is playing with his Rescue Heroes, Matt gets tossed aside. In fact, when I went to find him to write my review, I went to the Rescue Heroes dollhouse, then to the pile of figures next to it, and finally found poor Matt under a chair.
The Rescue Heroes on the whole stand up to a great deal of tossing, throwing, and crashing into each other and other things, and from my nephews' experience, the only thing that usually happens is that their paint chips off, as is common with most action figures.
Unless you are seriously committed to having them all, I think Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Matt Medic is one you can probably skip.
