| pippadaisy's Full Review: Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Wendy Wa... |
Our journey with Fisher Price Rescue Heroes began with my sister deciding that my son needed to have the same toys he always coveted when playing at his cousins' house. I wasn't sure he was ready, but since she was getting him the big playset for his birthday, we relented and got him some figures for Valentine's Day and his birthday. Of course, now that he is a bona fide Rescue Heroes addict, he had to get MORE and received Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Wendy Waters from his grandmother.
~&~ The Basics ~&~
Having already been confronted with the very unfeminine Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Ariel Flyer, I really didn't think Wendy could be much more masculine. Boy, was I wrong. Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Wendy Waters comes wearing a bronze suit with brown, silver, and black accents. She has some sort of brown harness on, with a huge Rescue Heroes belt buckle and the Mission Select logo in the middle of her chest, resting on her (and I'm sorry, but I need to point this out) enormous breasts. Wendy has huge black boots, huge black gloves, and a molded-on brown fire helmet with silver emblem (unlike Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Billy Blazes, whose helmet has a face mask, and is removable) and her trademark long red hair is a molded red braid sort of jutting out to the side like it is blowing in the wind.
Also included with Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Wendy Water is the enormous Mission Select backpack that all the figures in this series carry. Wendy's is mostly brown with black, grey, and silver accents, and has a large silver satellite dish for communications, what appears to be a large silver and black water tank at the bottom, and a silver water cannon attached to the pack by a flexible silver hose. The water cannon has an orange center. On the back is the omnipresent neon orange triangle, and a neon orange dial. Spin the dial until the picture of the mission you want is in the viewing area (the rest is covered with a clear smoke grey plastic), press the red button in the center and you'll hear Wendy's phrases relating to the selected mission. There are six missions: a tornado, a fire, an erupting volcano, an earthquake, an avalanche, and a flood. Selecting the avalanche mission several times, Wendy says:
"Wendy Waters reporting in! Avalanche! Alert! Moving out! I'm on my way!"
"I need help! The! Avalanche! Is heading this way! I need help! Standing by!"
"The! Avalanche! Victim! Needs! To seek shelter!"
"I! Need! To seek shelter! From! The! Avalanche!"
Like the rest of the figures in the Mission Select line, Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Wendy Waters will interact with the other figures, as well as the vehicles and structures from this line. Simply unplug her backpack, and plug her into the vehicles or structure.
Unlike some of the other Mission Select figures we have gotten, Wendy did not come with a video, and for that, I am thankful.
Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Wendy Waters uses two AAA batteries installed in the backpack via a Phillips-head screw locking a battery door. Batteries are included, but may be run down from use on store shelves.
~&~ Parent Perspective ~&~
Here is the part in my Rescue Heroes reviews where I tell you that I cannot write one of these reviews without giggling every time I refer to the Rescue Heroes. The overly-built bodies of the Rescue Heroes, their porn-star-sounding names, and the Burt Reynolds moustaches on some of the men just lend themselves to it, and watching the movies as often as I have, I can tell you that the plots aren't that far off either.
Then we have Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Wendy Waters. Unlike her compatriot Ariel Flyer, Wendy has a tiny waist and, were she a porn star, what would definitely be a chest worthy of a tax deduction for a business expense. Aside from that, however, she looks just as masculine as any of the male figures, from her huge muscles and hands to her thick neck.
I also haven't gotten over my problem with the way that the figures speak. While I certainly understand that only so much can be stored on a chip for these characters to interact in the playsets without repeating the same four phrases over and over, do they have to sound so much like William Shatner? My son has a speech delay, and I certainly don't want him to start speaking like his Rescue Heroes.
And of course, my last constant issue with these toys: the fact that they are really a non-stop commercial for more toys. Even though we were spared the video this time, we still received a brochure for more toys in the line, and since my son also received Rescue Heroes: The Movie for his birthday, it's just non-stop buy-more-toys action.
~&~ Play Value ~&~
Of course, since we are already well entrenched in the Rescue Heroes Mission Select universe, Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Mission Select Wendy Waters was bound to be a popular addition. I was surprised, however, that even though he was a gift for my son, she has been largely ignored, unlike the even more masculine Ariel Flyer. As a result, my daughter has appropriated Wendy as her own, leading to weddings between Wendy and Billy Blazes or Matt Medic.
All of these figures seem to be holding up very well, especially considered that they get banged up, dropped, fight with each other (which consists of being banged together), and slept with. My nephews' are older, and I've seen a bit of paint chipping on theirs, but that is to be expected with all action figures.
