| pippadaisy's Full Review: Fisher Price Rescue Heroes Walkie-Talkies |
My middle child, the nearly-three-year-old Buster, has three loves in this life: all things Toy Story, dinosaurs, and his beloved Rescue Heroes. My mother, always looking for ways to incorporate his loves with something educational or to help him work on his speech delays, found the Fisher-Price Rescue Heroes Walkie-Talkies and thought they'd be perfect to work on his speech, as well as possibly get him and his older sister out of my hair while cooking dinner. Little did she know how educational these would turn out to be.
::: Breaker, Breaker, This is Billy Blazes :::
Fisher-Price Rescue Heroes Walkie-Talkies are an inexpensive set of walkie-talkies featuring two popular characters from Fisher-Price's Rescue Heroes line: Billy Blazes and Rocky Canyon. Made predominantly of white plastic, the features are chunky for smaller hands, and the buttons are neon orange so your little one can find them easily. There is an on/off switch at the top, a flexible antenna, and two side buttons on the left-hand side of each walkie-talkie (obviously designed for right-handed users). One has red accents and a small icon of Billy Blazes, and the other has green accents with a picture of Rocky Canyon.
Pressing the bottom of the two side buttons makes the unit function like a regular walkie-talkie, but pressing the top button transmits the voice of the Rescue Hero featured. In the center of the walkie-talkie is a spin-dial much like those on the Mission Select backpacks, and you can select one of six different missions (tornado, volcano, fire, earthquake, avalanche, flood) for your Rescue Hero to talk about.
Each walkie-talkie uses one 9V battery, which inserts into the back of the unit behind the belt clip. The product literature boasts a range of 150 feet.
::: Sweetie, I'm Sure That's Not Billy :::
When I removed the Fisher-Price Rescue Heroes Walkie-Talkies and inserted the batteries, my husband and I tested them to determine that yes, they worked, and promptly threw out the packaging. As I said, my mother hoped that they would help Buster work on his articulation, but as it turns out, they were actually a vocabulary builder instead.
As Buster was holding one of the units, we heard some static, then voices. At first I thought maybe one of the other kids had pressed the button on the other unit to transmit the Rescue Hero voice, but no chance; we were picking up the CB radios of truckers on the expressway less than a mile from our house. Ever heard truckers talking to each other about slippery road conditions? Let's just say that my husband has often told me that I have a mouth like a trucker, but my colorful vocabulary pales in comparison.
A quick inspection of the unit shows no way to change either channel or frequency, so we confiscated the walkie-talkies until we could contact Fisher-Price.
::: Fisher-Price is One Class Act :::
On the Monday after Christmas, I promptly called Fisher-Price's Customer Service line, not expecting much. I have a deep and abiding hatred of Mattel and since they bought Fisher-Price years ago, I have been very skeptical of my once-trusted and once-favorite children's toy manufacturer.
The representative I spoke with was pleasant, and a dream to deal with. I was apparently the second mother who had called, but the first one with no packaging to return the items to the store for an exchange. She giggled a bit with me about Billy Blazes' new vocabulary, and promised to send me a voucher for the suggested retail price of the walkie-talkies, and told me I could do with them as I wished (I might leave them at my mom's house, which isn't as close to a popular truck route). Sure enough, two days later, I have the voucher in hand, which will be put toward more Rescue Heroes toys, I am sure.
::: Over and Out :::
While I can't recommend the Fisher-Price Rescue Heroes Walkie-Talkies for anyone who lives close to an expressway as I do, the toys seem very sturdy, and Fisher-Price's customer service was top-notch. What could have been a nightmare was actually a very pleasant experience, and I'm sure Buster will enjoy a trip to Target to get some MORE toys.
