| marytara's Full Review: Fisher Price Sesame Street: Real Sounds Keys |
I purchased the Fisher Price Sesame Street: Real Sounds Keys for my son during the holidays. I was tasked with finding a present of $5 or under to give to my own child at a Mom & tot holiday party. Of course, I procrastinated. The day before the party I ran out to the store in search of a small gift. When I happened upon the Fisher Price Sesame Street: Real Sounds Keys, I knew they would be a great choice for my little Elmo fan. At the perfect price of $4.99 - how could I refuse?
The Fisher Price Sesame Street: Real Sounds Keys are similar to the baby keys that are popular among the teething set. What's special about these keys is that they are 3 sesame street themed keys mounted on a space-age looking remote control that is equipped with both sounds, sayings and lights. These keys are recommended for ages 18 months and up though our son has enjoyed these since around 12 months of age.
The Keys
Here we have 3 sturdy plastic keys that are plastic covered in a faux metallic paint (2 are silver and one is gold). Each key has a colorful head of a happy Sesame Street character - Red for Elmo, Blue for Cookie Monster and Orange for Ernie. The keys are mounted on a plastic swivel key ring and can be slid, shaken, mouthed, and more.
The Remote
Its pretty cool if I must say so myself. Shaped similar to a car alarm or automatic door opener remote the Fisher Price Sesame Street: Real Sounds Keys remote is techno-colored in aqua-blue and lime green. It features 3 buttons that when pressed activate sounds, sayings and lights.
Red button- A round red button with the shape of a key on it. When pressed the red light on the bottom of the remote will flash and one of the following sayings is activated.
Cookie Monster-"Here's comes Cookie Monster"
Ernie -"Ready to Roll"
Elmo -"Let's Go For a Ride"
Orange Button A larger orange button with the face of Telly on it. When pressed one of 3 different "beep" sounds will activate and the red light of remote will flash.
Yellow Button This is a yellow triangular button that when pressed makes a sound very similar to a car alarm or door look being turned on or off. Like the other buttons when pressed the red light on the remote flashes.
What's Great..
The Fisher Price Sesame Street: Real Sounds Keys brings together several things that my son adores into one fairly simple toy. These are: keys, button pushing, and Sesame Street (Elmo). The culmination of these three elements makes this toy a winner. My son and I both get a chuckle out of the Sesame Street sounds this remote makes, especially "Here comes Cookie Monster!". We've gotten more than a few funny looks in stores from other shoppers when he is playing with this but his happy smiles and expressions more than make up for a strangers odd glance.
These keys are the perfect size to "toss and take". Their larger size and bright color combination makes them attractive and also saves them from getting easily lost at the bottom of the diaper bag, or your purse. Yet, they are also small enough to be the perfect size for young toddler hands to manipulate and enjoy.
The Fisher Price Sesame Street: Real Sounds Keys are also quite durable. Ours have been thrown, dropped, teethed up and more and they are none the worse for the wear after almost 6 months of frequent use (and abuse).
What's Not..
My biggest complaints with the Fisher Price Sesame Street: Real Sounds Keys are the existence (or non-existence) of an on/off or volume control. Because there is no on/off switch these keys have gone off accidentally at a few inopportune moments. (Think- church, fancy restaurants, baby sleeping, etc). I really wish there was some sort of on/off or at the minimum a volume control included. However, that would most likely drive the price of this toy up which might not make them "worth it".
Also, this toy takes "non-standard" batteries. The remote is powered by 3 button cell batteries that can be replaced. In 6 months we have not yet had to replace our batteries, so I am pleased with the battery-life as button-cells can be a bit pricey.
Overall
The Fisher Price Sesame Street: Real Sounds Keys have saved many a trip to the grocery store, Wal-Mart, car trips and more. Of course my son still loves Mommy's or Daddy's keys the best, but these are almost as much fun and much safer to play with. We've been very pleased with this inexpensive purchase and have definitely gotten good use out of these keys.
