meagandowney's Full Review: Fisher-Price Soothe and Glow Seahorse
My daughter has a few stuffed animals she likes to cuddle with at bedtime, but I try to keep her crib as low-key as possible so I didn't have anything electronic or stimulating in the crib until she turned one. I bought her the Fisher-Price Soothe and Glow Seahorse for $11 at Target while buying her a few presents for her first birthday party. Her older sister actually picked it out. I'm finding that less is more with toys, but this little blue seahorse manages to stay pretty simple while reinforcing a bedtime routine.
I have been known to stare at a toy with a face for a long time before giving it to my child, because so many toys look creepy to me after a while. Luckily, this seahorse isn't one of them. Whoever designed the face and eyes did a nice job, even if this toy hardly resembles a real seahorse. It's a soothing blue that would work for either a boy or a girl (if color is a thing) with a yellow plastic tummy that lights up when pushed. Soothing organ-like music emanates from the toy for about 5 minutes, but baby can push the tummy again to play another round of music.
The toy is small enough to be cuddled by a one year old, but my baby mostly just watches it and touches it at bedtime. It helps to get her past that awful transition time when I have to put her down and tiptoe out of the room. The music also makes the creaks in the floorboards sound less frightening when I creep away and offers a little bit of light for wee ones who don't like the dark.
The toy has a low and high volume setting as well as an off-switch. The box says it comes with 3 AA batteries installed, which I haven't yet had to change after a month of use. My daughter likes to poke her hand into the crevice where the batteries are, but she hasn't successfully pried them out from the seahorse. The fabric is soft, velvety and easy to spot-clean.
This isn't the kind of toy your child will get much play time from, but it really helps to ease the bedtime fears. It really is surprisingly soothing for a toy that runs on batteries.
Four out of five stars overall.
