Pros: They have no artificial ingredient and work.
Cons: You have to like licorice and menthol.
The Bottom Line: I found my new lozenges. I like the way they taste and feel as if I am inhaling a more natural product than others I have used.

| jo.com's Full Review: Fisherman's Friend Lozenges |
I always have throat lozenges with me, as does my husband. It is just a habit weve gotten into because when we are working we talk a lot. Ninety nine percent of the time I buy Halls. I can get a pack of 40 for $1.29 but Fishermans Friend was calling to me one day. I think it must be the picture of the ship on the package.
About Fishermans Friend:
These come in a few different flavors, which I will list, but I have the Original Extra Strong. These come in a paper package of 2 packs with 20 lozenges in each pack. So I have 40 for $1.99. They are not wrapped which is something I do not like about them. I like to grab some Halls and put them in my pocket and I really cant do that with these.
They are intended to help coughs, sore throats and help nasal passages feel cool and clearer. They also help bronchial irritation that you might get with the common cold or inhaled irritants.
They contain no artificial flavors or ingredients, which is something I really like.
One of the ingredients, Capsicum, is a plant whose fruit is used for a variety of medicinal reasons. Capsicum has been used for decades as a catalyst for other herbs. "Capsicum stimulants circulation and enhances blood flow, it is considered food for the circulatory system, a common condiment to the diet."

Other flavors are Aniseed, Mint, Original toothfriendly, Sugar free mint, Sugar free lemon, Apple and Cinnamon, and Salmiak- These are available only in some countries.
How to use these:
Adults and children 5 years of age and over can use these. They should be dissolved slowly in your mouth. You can take them every hour as needed for a cough or every 2 hours as needed for a sore throat or as directed by a doctor.
Do not exceed the recommended dosage. If you have a cough that doesn't go away after a week, see your doctor. If your sore throat is severe, lasts for more than 2 days, is accompanied or followed by fever, headache, rash, swelling, nausea, or vomiting, call your doctor. Please keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. Of course if you are pregnant or nursing a baby, talk with your doctor before using these.
Ingredients:
Active Ingredients: Menthol (10 mg)
Inactive Ingredients: Capsicum, Dextrin, (Which is similar to starch) Eucalyptus Oil, Natural Licorice, Sugar, Tragacanth (Used to help with the consistency of lozenges.)
How they taste, smell and work:
The lozenges are round and brown with a slight smell to them of licorice. I like the taste of them, however you have to like the taste of licorice. If you dont you will not be able to let these dissolve in your mouth and you certainly wont want to chew them. I love licorice so I find the taste very pleasant. These have 10 mg of menthol as you can see so they are strong. Some of the other flavors have 1/2 that so they wont be as strong and you might like them better. I really like the feel of the sensation I get when I inhale while they are melting in my mouth. The menthol immediately cools my throat and if I have a tickle making me cough it stops it right away.
I like the natural ingredients and think that the inconvenience of not having them wrapped outweighs the convenience. They also come in tin containers so you might like those as well. I have bought them and I can just toss them in my purse without worrying that the bag will rip or get wet.
I cant imagine many children will find these to their liking. I dont think mine would have when they were 5 years old but that will be up to your own childs taste. I just cant recommend them for children because I dont think theyll tolerate the menthol and youll just be wasting your money.
My final thoughts:
I love these and will be replacing them with my Halls, which contain sucrose and corn syrup. They are more expensive but I find that they last longer. I can go for a couple of hours without feeling as if I need another one. I suck on the Halls oftentimes like they are candy. Halls are good I am not putting them down- and they have as much menthol as some of the other flavors that Fishermans Friend comes in. Comparing those two you will find Halls will be the better buy. If you want a more natural product and you do want more menthol, I definitely recommend the Original Extra Strong.
I have had no adverse affects from these of any kind.
Feel free to leave me a question or comment.

Some history on the name: "much favoured by the local fisherman, who soon began refering to the miracle lozenges as their Friends, and a necessary relief from the problems caused by severe weather conditions encountered upon each voyage. Therefore, it was those early consumers who gave us the name Fishermans Friend." www.fishermansfriend.com
