elzora's Full Review: Fiskars 99977097 8 Non-stick Scissors
I first learned about Fiskars sewing scissors (or shears) many years ago. Since then, there have been many brands that make scissors that look like Fiskars, but in my experience, they are not made with the same quality that I've found with the Fiskars brand.
Since I have a licensed daycare in my home, we do a lot of crafts projects, and a couple years ago I found a wonderful double sided tape called "Terrifically Tacky Tape", that we used to make Christmas ornaments. This tape is extremely sticky, and cutting into it with normal scissors was not working well. The tape was leaving residue on the blades of the scissors, and I as continually cleaning this off, which wasn't an easy chore.
Then one day when I was shopping at my local JoAnn's Fabric and Craft store, I found a new kind of Fiskars scissors, and these claimed to be non-stick! Yes! That was exactly what I needed, and I didn't hesitate to make the purchase.
Fiskars Non-Stick Scissors
These non-stick scissors come in a variety of colored handles. Mine have the signature orange handles that I associate with the Fiskars name. The handles are made of molded plastic, and they are incredibly comfortable to hold. Even when using these for extended periods of time, they don't cause much hand fatigue.
The blades are made of stainless steel, and are coated with a non- stick material giving them a dark gray color, similar to the dark gray coating that is on non-stick Teflon fry pans. They measure 8 inches in length. The tips on one of the blades is sharp and the other is rounded.
Claims
Fiskars claims that these non-stick scissors will cut through glue, tape, stickers, Velcro® and other "challenging materials". They state that the non-stick coating will give you precise, clean cuts.
My Experience
Even though I purchased these Fiskars Non-Stick Scissors for use when making crafts, and specifically cutting through Terrifically Tacky Tape, I now use them almost exclusively for everything else. I use them when I am sewing, mending, and other types of craft activities.
They are extremely sharp, in fact I have cut my fingers on the sharp blades before. Because of this, I would recommend that children use these only with adult supervision.
I won't tell you that none of the strong double sided tape stuck to the blades of the scissors, because it did. However, on the occasions when that happened, I was able to pull the tape off of the blades quite easily, as opposed to having to scrub the blades with a steel pad or abrasive scrubber.
Even when these Fiskars Non-stick Scissors do get some of the tacky tape stuck to them, the scissors are still usable. My other scissors completely failed when they had tape residue on the blades! It became difficult to even get them open. There is a world of difference when using the non-stick version!
The Christmas before last, my husbands workplace had a "Red Green" themed Christmas party. If you are familiar with the Red Green show, you know that duct tape is one of Reds most popular fix it materials. I made a corsage and other accessories out of duct tape. Normally duct tape will do a real number on scissors, but I was able to cut the tape (both vertically and horizontally) with the Fiskars Non-Stick Scissors with ease.
My sewing basket still has several other pair of Fiskars scissors, including pinking shears, but this pair with the non-stick coating are so much nicer to use. They glide easily open and closed, and cut extremely easily and effortlessly.
Fiskars are usually on the higher end of the price scale, and these cost more than their normal scissors. They retail for around $20, but you can always do what I do, and use your Michael's or JoAnn's 40% off coupons and get them for a decent price.
If you like to do crafts, and use any types of tapes and glues with your projects, I highly recommend the Fiskars Non-Stick Scissors, they are an excellent pair of scissors.
